IT'S A VIBIN THING!!!!!!
-Denver has a vibrant hip-hop scene and one of the best MC's out there goes by the name of Dent. He got his nickname from the girls around the school yard because of his pronounced dimples. But years later, his nickname could be drawn from the way he can leave other MC's feeling banged up after a rap battle, or from the anagram that he uses as a mantra: "Destroying Every Negative Thought".
That positive vibe and his ability to construct fresh rhymes has taken him to England where his single "Sunshowers" got some success, and back to Denver where he is not only a rapper, but an entrepreneur, artist and father of three. "Every decision you make in life has consequences. And I feel that God has blessed me with three little lives that I can draw creativity through. It's definitely hard being a hip-hop dad, you know?
"I create music and kids. That's how I will live on," he says with a smile. "It's all for a greater gain. My children will have my music to vibe out to when they are older. And even now, it's really cool because I take them digging with me at records stores. Always drawing Always being artistic."
What he is exposing his children to is exactly what instilled his love for music at a young age. "I come from a rock background to tell you the truth. My uncle was a crazy rocker who would always play the guitar, play drums and listen to Led Zeppelin," he recalls. "But when it comes to hip-hop, the first introduced to it, I remember buying Rap Masters tapes at Walgreens with my mom. Then watching Beat Street, Crush Groove, Wild Style and seeing stuff from New York was like 'Whoa!". And to see the culture of hip-hop was just amazing for me."
At a time when hip-hop, in its purest form, is lost in a sea of bling and Bentleys, Dent has done his best to stay true to the culture and the art form of the genre. "It's crazy Hip-hop is strictly a business these days. The media and the music labels feed the masses what they think hip-hop should be. But you know, as I know, hip-hop is a lot deeper than that. Like KRS-One says, 'Rap is what you do. Hip-hop is something you live.'"
Right now the final touches are being put on Dent's latest mixtape, Make Ya'll Feel It. This time around he worked with his Radio Bums partner DJ Chonz and Raaaah Foundashun beat miner Soul Power. "I hooked up with Chonz and asked him to help me make this mixtape that will get the masses pumped. So I put it in his hamds. I gave him the music, we sat down with it for a week and hammered things out."
"It was a total vibe session when we worked on it. There's just a fresh feel with it [the mixtape] Life is so crazy nowadays, I just want people to enjoy themselves, enjoy music and enjoy life without being so serious with their life's complications. And I hope Make Ya'll Feel It will do that."
He's about to unleash his very 1st, Long awaited 1st LP March 2008
