Diana krall was born on the 16th of November 1964, Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada. Brought up in a musically oriented family she would teach herself to play Fats Waller recordings. She would not only learn to play the tune but to sing all the song at the same time. She was taught to play the piano during school time but the Jazz came out when she played along with the school band. The first gig came at the age of 15 and has been touring and playing since then. After successfully winning a scholarship in Jazz at Berklee College of music she returned home to carry on her playing career. Soon her musical associates Ray Brown and Jeff Hamilton impressed by her ability convinced Krall to go to LA. There she studied and shaped more to a singing style of performance as before she was nervous of her own voice. Because of this new confidence in herself, more opportunities arose and bigger and better venues were available to her.
In 1984 she went back to her homeland and settled in Toronto. She continued her playing and in 1990 she returned to the States and while playing there received plaudits from John Clayton. He and Hamilton helped her create her first album and also accompanied her later recordings. Her album was mainly dedicated to Nat “King” Cole, which was suitable for her style at the time. 1997’s Love scenes was a more defined creation and had created a style of her own. It involved her power as an artist and also her personality shone through.
Krall has continued her success and has released more albums over the years and her recent release “the look of love” has cemented her place in the Jazz arena of artist.
In late 1993, Krall married singer-songwriter Elvis Costello.
