| Dickie Goodman & All His Friends
GB8 Goodman Brothers
Liner Notes By Jon Goodman
The most famous of Dickie Goodman records have always used original song samples. And the most devout Dickie Goodman fans have always preferred those records to some of the Break-Ins that had cover versions.
This is historically ironic because, the very first Dickie Goodman hit was made famous partially due to its 1950’s politically incorrect use of “Race Music” (samples of the original recordings) rather than the more socially acceptable cover versions of the time.
This latest Goodman Brothers album takes advantage of the opportunity to share some Dickie Goodman records that had cover versions as Dickie collaborated with some very talented musicians. Many of the covers sound like the real thing.
But the whole album is not just cover versions. It is truly an album including Dickie’s friends. Some tracks have originals, some have covers by great artists and some are Break-In records Dickie made with a partner.
Old fans will appreciate and enjoy the originals with partners and may even find a new appreciation for some of the covers and how good they actually sound. New fans will appreciate and enjoy EVERYTHING!
The cover art of this album is representative of Dickie’s work with icons of the topics he covered and a private photo of him from the early 70’s. But another special picture on the cover draws attention to the Posthumous GRAMMY presented to him in 2001 for his original hit record from 1956, The Flying Saucer.
In 1956, there were no Grammy Awards because the organization who later would bestow such emblems of achievement upon so many music artists for the next several decades including today; simply did not exist back then.
The GRAMMY is extra special because Dickie Goodman never received a Gold Record for The Flying Saucer, even though the record charted number one in every music chart of the day other than Billboard, yet even Billboard placed the record at number 3; unfortunately, Morris Levy (always count on your friends) at Roulette never requested a Gold Record for this legendary record producer.
The last track on the album, Dickie Goodman You're An Original By Steve Bryant 1:29 2007 Rollye James Show Contest Winner, is a special track donated by a fan during an on-air contest on the Rollye James Radio Show. Steve Bryant is a multitalented radio and TV host who goes back a long way…to a bygone era when DJ’s played vinyl 45’s on the radio and the fans decided what a hit was. These days, radio is pre-programmed for big companies to decide what the hits are going to be, before you ever hear them. That is why satellite radio and internet downloads have become the new frontier. And thanks to All Dickie Goodman’s Friends, like Steve Bryant, Rollye James and fans old and new, Dickie Goodman lives on in a new age, a new era, and the legend continues. This album is dedicated to Dickie Goodman And All His FRIENDS. |
