Durty, born Andrew Akinpelu out of Tampa, Florida, attributes his ability to come up with original concepts and staying true to his individuality, to his upbringing in a single parent home. God has always been a major influence. And Durty received support from home in the form of great encouragement. He was taught the importance of keeping busy throughout the year and to work hard at, his physical, mental, and spiritual strengths.
Life’s hurdles, such as not coming from an ideal family structure, forced him to dig deep within himself. And it gave him the strength he needed to continue to pursue his music career. He had been raised to strive for excellence in everything he did, and this made Durty good at anything he focused on. What was his blessing also made it hard to decide what he desired for his life. Traveling outside of his hometown to different areas, such as the Midwest and West Coast, it gave Durty a chance to learn more about the nature of life. Travel gave him experience in the “real world.” And the experiences lead him to music, which became an outlet in the world. A place to release the “energy” that he is full of. The greatest challenge then became to stay motivated and determined to do what he needed to place himself where he really wanted to be within his personal life and his music career.
Durty wanted to base his career out of Tampa because of the love he has for his hometown. He felt as though it would become the next emerging empire for music.
In 2000, he started on with Lava Sound Productions. Durty was given a beat and a studio. And he simply added his own lyrics for a recipe of success. Teaming up with Lava Sound brought the opportunity he needed to get his music, and swag, out into the world. Durty began performing all over the United States, in cities such as, Atlanta, Miami, Las Vegas, Hollywood (California) and throughout the Midwest. On the West Coast, he had become known through his family ties with rap group TB Ryders. As he performed he was able to establish his originality and “swag.” He was successfully accepted and gained a number of fans from across the country. Now Durty works as a producer and songwriter for Lava Sound and now collaborates with various artists to develop a new sound for the future.
Loyal, hardworking, educated and “real” are how this artist describes himself. Establishing balance between his personal beliefs and the messages in his music are most important to Durty. The soul of his music reveals itself due to having been raised in the church. And his edge, or “swag”, comes from his upbringing in urban communities. While living in Los Angeles, Durty was introduced to the business aspects of the music industry, as well as, conducting business in general. Time spent in the Midwest helped to bring out his concerns for environmental change, politics and racism. These experiences motivated him to unite individuals of all genders, ages and races.
Durty’s music is meant to inspire the world, to teach life’s lessons or to simply vibe. To love, live, have fun and fear God is the motto he lives by and continues to passes it on to his fans through his love for music.
