Echo & The Bunnymen is one of the (if not the) finest of the British Post-Punk bands of the late \'70s and one of the bright shining lights of \'80s music. They have created a series of records that have ranged from gloomy, muted blasts of dark guitars and haunting vocals to upbeat pop songs with fun orchestral arrangements. This band has woven sullen images of mystery with their cloudy, swirling, psychedelic tapestries.
Lead singer Ian McCullough flaunted his permanently tousled and nicotine-addled self through the English press of the \'80s and his band backed him up with Doors-fueled dramatic dirges that grew into masterpieces that are arguably quite gothic. This queer, angular pop could draw one into the glorious dregs of the underground with its skillful lyrics such as those on their album \"Heaven Up Here.\" Or it could send one sailing across the deep blue orchestral seas like in \"Ocean Rain\".
At the end of the \'80s, Echo & the Bunnymen achieved their greatest successes, filtering their original sound down to some catchy, poetic alt-pop.
After a very poor album 1990 with a different frontman, the band has proved they still have it. Their most successful recent release from 1999 \"What Are You Going To Do With Your Life?\" showed the band is still capable of evoking their beautiful gloomy grandeur without falling victim to the dreaded \"modern update\" that similar surviving bands such as The Cure have suffered.
