Elvis Presley was born on January 8, 1935 in Tupelo, Mississippi in a small shotgun house. He was the second born of twins. His elder brother, Jesse Garon, was stillborn. Elvis grew up in poverty. At age 13, his father, Vernon Presley, and mother, Gladys Presley, loaded up the car and moved out to Memphis, Tennessee so his father could have a new job with hopefully better pay. Elvis would walk around the town during the day listening to the blacks playing blues music. He was so fascinated with their moves, which he would later do himself earning him the name "Elvis, the Pelvis" (which he didn't like being called) In highschool, Elvis attended Humes Highschool. He was pretty much a loner because he wore his hair long and slicked back with long sideburns while everyone else wore crew cuts. One day while in the bathroom, a couple boys tried to cut his hair. They were stopped by Red West, who became his life long friend. Elvis worked as a truck driver after being fired from an Usher job at the movies, after getting in a fight. One day while driving the truck he stopped by Sun Records and went in to record a song for his mother. The secretary talked to him and asked him a few questions, including "Who do you sound like?" Which Elvis replied, "I don't sound like nobody." She also asked "What kind of music do you do?" To which Elvis said, "I do all kinds." Elvis went in and recorded two songs, one which he later sang again "That's Alright Mama." Phillips was not too impressed, but the secretary was, so she kept the tape Elvis recorded in hopes of helping him become big. A few days later, Phillips called Elvis and Elvis came in and Phillips hooked him up with guitarist, Scotty Moore and drummer, D.J. Fontana. The trio worked on songs, but when the regular country music wasn't working for them, Elvis bolted out singing blues and moving around. Phillips was so impressed with the new sound, he played the song on the radio. Everyone loved it and Elvis was on his way to stardom. Although Elvis wasn't big all over the USA, he was huge in the south. While performing in Tupelo, he met Colonel Tom Parker, who was soon to become his manager. The fans loved Elvis and he was the next big thing, after airing on the Ed Sullivan show, where he earned his nickname. He made 4 movies during the 50's; Love Me Tender, Loving You, Jailhouse Rock (his most famous movie) and King Creole. In 1958, Elvis was drafted into the Army. He wasn't pleased with this. Elvis' mother, Gladys, was getting sick and Elvis returned to the states to see her. Shortly after leaving, Gladys died. Elvis was devistated, but the army didn't give him much time to mourn his mother's death. A while later, he met Priscilla Beaulieau, a 14 year old army brat, who's father was stationed the same place as Elvis, in Germany. At first, Priscilla's parents didn't want Elvis seeing her, seeing as they were 10 years apart, but she got to. Elvis returned to USA in 1960. He did the "Welcome Home, Elvis" special with Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr., just to name a few. When he returned he got to work on G.I. Blues, a movie trying to show what its like in the army. He was to make more than 2 dozen movies after that. Elvis never forgot about Priscilla, and after dating for more than 10 years, Elvis and Priscilla married on May 1, 1967. Exactly 9 months after, on February 1, 1968, their first and only daughter, Lisa Marie, was born. Lisa Marie made Elvis very happy, but their marriage was falling apart. In 1968, Elvis did the famous comeback special, which gained him a lot of fans and showed Elvis how much he loved performing. In 1970, Elvis started a contract to perform in Las Vegas. He loved being back on the stage in front of the audience. In 1973, after Priscilla tried making her marriage to Elvis work, they divorced. Elvis was devestated. Priscilla got custody of Lisa Marie and moved to Los Angeles. Elvis then dated Linda Thompson, a former Miss Tennessee, after she couldn't handle him, he dated Ginger Alden, his last girlfriend. It's said they were engaged, but it's not certain. He was heavily addicted to prescription drugs, and everyone was worried about him. He didn't see how he was hurting himself, he just knew he "needed" them. He took over 10 pills a day and he was gaining weight more and more. After a scare of being sent to the hospital after feeling sick, he said he'd quit with so much drugs, but didn't. On the 16th of August, Elvis retired to his bedroom after kissing Lisa Marie goodnight and read a few books. His favorite, was the Bible. He woke up that night, and went to the bathroom. Ginger Alden woke up later to find him passed out on the bathroom floor. She called downstairs to the Memphis Mafia member, Joe Esposito. He ran upstairs and tried to keep Elvis awake and breathing. The ambulance was called and Elvis went to the hospital. His last words were "I won't" when Ginger said for him not to fall asleep. Elvis Presley's death got out quick and thousands of fans flocked to Graceland, his Memphis home. It shocked the nation, and to this day people still love him, and new generations are starting to get to know who he is, and loving him. Elvis was the best performer ever and will be remembered forever. He was buried at his home, and fans are welcome to come see his grave and house and other items. Elvis held the record for most snigles and records sold, beating out Michael Jackson and The Beatles. Elvis was a one of a kind and always will be the King of Rock 'n Roll.
