| My personal experiences of visiting and performing in the American Southwest have given me some of my most treasured memories. From Chaco Canyon in the north to the pepper fields in the south, the imposing geography and climate inspire many visitors to endow those who live there with magical and mystical qualities.
The beauty and heart of this landscape and it’s sacredness, provides some of the most compelling inspiration for the arts of any place in North America. Where three cultures seem to blend effortlessly in a relationship to the earth both on a physical and spiritual level.
The “Desert Project” was started towards the end of the last century when Tim Miller recorded some short sequences of frame drum samples of ideas that I had. I have always remembered what one of my composition teachers had said, that it is a good idea to compose starting with an instrument other than your own. I had used this approach in my rock composition days when I would start with a bass line. It always yielded some new and interesting results. In this case I started with the percussion and built from there.
I knew that what I wanted to create was a very earthy and evocative recording from beginning to end. And I knew that if I was patient that the proper elements would eventually come my way. And so one by one the players started showing up in my life and contributing major components. |
