| Burning with infectious melody and hook-laden craftwork, Evan Gold presented his second independent release, STEAL THE SCENE, in March of 2003. By late 2003 it had largely caught the ear of the indie community and garnered Evan offers from numerous labels. In March of 2004, Evan signed with the Texas based WTL Records to release a single culled from the E.P. August 17th 2004 saw the release of the limited edition single, "The Sons Of Consequence”, with a bold cover of Madonna's "Borderline" as the bonus cut on the 3 track single. "Robert Downey Jr." was also featured to round out the disc. ("Sons" was also featured on Shut Eye Records Buzzlighter 7 comp. in July of 04 - alongside Brian Jonestown Massacre and Dios Malos, - as well as Lollipop Magazine's MP3 compilations #67 & #68, True Talent Management’s compilation 7, and it made it's International debut on the UK based Chromium Records "UK Unsigned Top 20" - all in early 05). The single was immediately embraced by College/CMJ stations as well as on web radio, picking up speed in a short time and has sold in excess of 1,000 copies nationally.
(Spun at WSBF - Clemson, SC, WBER -Penfield, NY, WEFT -East Central Illinios, KZSU - Stanford, WARC - Allegheny, WMUA, - University of Massachusetts, WRUW, WEFT - East Central Illinois, Camden Country College - Blackwood, NJ, WNRN - Charlottesville, VA, WNYU - New York, NY, WPRK -Winter Park, FL, WICB -Ithica, NY, WHRV - Binghamton, NY - as well as on countless web radio stations across the net)
STEAL THE SCENE (nominated for the 2005 Radio Crystal Blue airplay award) was the follow up to his critically acclaimed 2001 debut effort, APEX MATTER, which won high praises amongst the anti-folk scene in NYC, as well as at the New York Independent Film and Music Festival [February 2002 @ Madison Square Garden] and the 7th annual Millennium Music Conference [February 2003 in Harrisburg, PA], the latter of which found Gold headlining the acoustic stage. He would return once again to PA to headline at MMC8 in June of 04 and again for the 3rd consecutive year at MMC9 in 05, in support of SCENE.
APEX MATTER [2001] yielded the single “Breakfast in Bed” which appeared on Shut Eye Records Buzzlighter 3 compilation [March 2003], garnering national airplay. The slow rolling bongos and the creeping chords mixed with the passion stained vocals and cathartic climax proved a perfect example of the urgency and emotion which was displayed all throughout Gold’s debut effort.
“With the first record, the template was more or less John Frusciante’s “To Record Only Water for 10 Days” meeting up with Radiohead’s “OK Computer” in a magnetic field to watch ships pass in the night,….but I felt that it wound up sounding like more of a snapshot then a moving life like image”, says Gold of his first release. “My main goal with Steal the Scene was to have that brimming glow of life, you know? ...not just a recorded sound but an actual 3D experience put forth from the passion within. I was really going for a Sunny Day Real Estate meets Social Distortion vibe, with a little bit of Bowie’s strangeness and beauty thrown in…just for good measure.
Joined by Bassist/Percussionist Chris Tropeano [Gold’s collaborator for more than 10 years], Steal The Scene found Gold once again multi-tasking… writing all the material, handling all the guitar work, as well as the drumming and the vocals, as he did on his debut.
Tropeano and Gold started their musical journey with acoustic jam sessions in mid 1993 and by the following year they had joined their first band together. RISE, a post-Alternative outfit, was formed in March of 1994 and gigged and recorded through 1998, releasing 4 independent e.p.’s as well as one single [“Small Sacrifice”], which found its way onto Reaction Records “Volume 6” [1996]. “When I joined that band I was 16 and when it dissolved I was 20….I learned a lot about hard work, plenty about souring friendships, and even more about the real world as I found myself on stages across Manhattan, [CBGB’s, The Spiral, The Pyramid Club, etc.] Where I wasn’t even old enough to actually get in the door.”
After a 18 month stretch spent in California starting in mid 2003, where Gold gigged and wrote all along the Northern region (San Francisco/San Jose/Santa Clara/Berkeley) on stages ranging from The Red Devil Lounge (400 capacity venue, - opening for Epic recording artist Val Emmich as well as Viv) to Epic Arts Tea House (a converted apartment/art space in Berkeley), from galleries to cafes - Gold has returned to his hometown of Brooklyn, NYC to live and record again, this time with Chris and drummer Pat Fusco (formerly of Lines Of Sight, Dyra, and The New Left Right). The band has already begun it's campaign in support of the yet to be released record with shows at Canal Room, Tribeca, Sin-e`, and the Knitting Factory amongst others. They are currently in preproduction in Williamsburg, starting the tracking of what will be their first full length.
Plans now are for a January/February 06 release on the New York based indie - MODiRN Records, which announced it's plans of signing the band in July of 2005.
For immediate release:
MODiRN Records to sign Evan Gold & A Brighter Light
(New York, NY) - On Thursday, July 14th - the New York based MODiRN Records (headed by Mark Landgraf) announced its plans to sign acclaimed Brooklyn indie rockers Evan Gold & A Brighter Light. The bands upcoming album is due to be released in late 2005.
Evan and the band will spend the month of August in the studio tracking the bands yet to be titled full length. The record will be the follow up to Gold's 2 independently released and highly regarded e.p.'s (2001's APEX MATTER and 2003's STEAL THE SCENE).
MODiRN Records is home to Years Of Static and the Asher Kahn Band as well as having released 2 successful independent rock compilation's featuring Vic Thrill (featuring Bill Campion [ex-The Bogmen]), The Pacific, Acquiesce & Billionaire Boys Club, among others. "I went with MODiRN because they believe solely in the music and allow their artists to have complete control as well as room to grow," said Gold. "I was very excited to release Evan's new record after hearing his first 2 EP's. He is a genuine singer/ songwriter influenced by artists that I really love, such as Jeff Buckley and Elliot Smith. I know that this next record, with a full band, will be Evan's best material yet." Landgraf stated.
