Grand March
Aida is the story of the love between Radames, the commander of the Egyptian army, and Aida, a slave of the Pharaoh’s daughter, Amneres. In the Grand March, Radames is returning to Egypt after defeating the Ethiopian army in war. The march celebrating his triumphant return, originally heralded by trumpets, is played on trombones.
La Bohème by Giacomo Puccini
O Mimi
La Bohème chronicles the bohemian life of a group of artists living in the Latin Quarter of Paris in the 1830s. In this Act IV duet, Rodolfo and Marcello lament the loss of their muses, Mimi and Musetta. The homogeneous blending of the two trombones paints a picture of compassion and similarity between the two characters.
O soave fanciulla
This duet is the confession of immediate and deep love between Rodolfo and Mimi at the end of Act I. It lends itself easily to performance on trombone because of the similarities of range and timbre to the voice.
Don Pasquale by Gaetano Donizetti
Tornami a dir che m’ami
Don Pasquale decides he must get married in order to prevent his nephew, Ernesto, from inheriting his estate. In order to accomplish this Don Pasquale marries Norina who, unbeknownst to him, is in love with Ernesto. Don Pasquale jealously listens as Norina and Ernesto proclaim their love in Tornami a dir che m’ami.
La Traviata by Giuseppe Verdi
Brindisi
This tragic love story between the courtesan, Violetta, and Alfredo Germont begins at a party where the two have just met. They sing a duet exclaiming the wonders of love, music, laughter and drinking. The trombones capture the carefree attitude of this acrobatic work through mastery of technique.
L’Amico Fritz by Pietro Mascagni
Tutto Tace
The old wealthy bachelor Fritz engages in a bet with his friends that he will never marry. He unexpectedly falls in love with the daughter of his vineyard’s groundskeeper, Suzel, but denies it in order to win the bet. In this duet Fritz and Suzel have just spent time alone with each other and reflect upon their amorous feelings.
Han della porpora
In Han della porpora or the “Cherry Duet” Fritz finds himself alone with Suzel while she is picking cherries. Since they have not yet admitted their love, they sing about the cherries in order to avoid discussing their true feelings.
I Pagliacci by Ruggero Leoncavallo
E allor perche
Canio is suspicious of his wife, Nedda, and is convinced she is unfaithful. His suspicions are not without just cause as Nedda has been contemplating eloping with her true love, Silvio. This duet is the climax of the scene in which Silvio has finally convinced Nedda to run away with him.
Gioacchino Rossini
La Pesca (The Fish)
La Pesca is the tenth song in a set composed for soprano voices and piano called Soirees Musicales. The writing in this composition allows the trombone to sing and once again highlights its similarities to the human voice.
Gioacchino Rossini
Duetto buffo di due gatti
The music of this comedic work for two sopranos and piano is characteristic of Rossini. The lyrics are in contrast to his usual style and consist solely of the repeated word “Miau.” The performers, in imitation of cats, “miau” both on their instruments and with their voices.
La forza del destino by Giuseppe Verdi
Overture
Alvaro and Leonora are madly in love, but are kept apart by deception, murder and ultimately by the force of destiny. The trombones tackle the overture to this work by not only performing a standard trombone excerpt, but also repeating it as it appears in the other instruments of the orchestra. The low rumbling theme is ominous as a harbinger of the impending tragedy that will result from the force of destiny.
-Liner notes by Scott Glenn and Abigail Peters
