f!ght f!ght f!ght:
All journeys begin with a relocation, either literal or metaphorical, and f!ghtf!ghtf!ght’s journey proves no exception. When a new stage of Kelly Shinkaruk’s career prompted a move from indie rock hotbed Edmonton, Alberta to sleepy government town Ottawa, Ontario in 2004, she knew that a new chapter in her musical life would occur. Browsing the web, Kelly came into contact with drummer Etienne Sylvain who’s musical journey had also changed with the dissolution of his previous band, Clarington. In summer 2005, they got together and started playing songs written by Kelly for previous projects and soon decided to solidify this new journey by adding Sebastien Dupont, a bass and guitar player who was “too indie rock” for his former bandmates. With the line-up complete, they started writing material drawing heavily on influences such as Chinese Stars and The Moving Units with Seb on bass, Etienne on drums, and Kelly providing guitar and vocals.
About one month into this new project, the crew felt they wanted to expand to include more keyboards and fuller guitar parts and went on a mission to locate the fourth and final member of their band. Several people tried out but none really clicked until a friend of Kelly’s introduced her to musical Geronimo, Jameson Bevington, a prog rock devotee and drummer by training. Jameson wanted to expand his musical horizons by playing guitar and keyboards in a new project and thus began f!ghtf!ghtf!ght in its final entity.
With influences ranging from Superchunk to King Crimson, Fugazi to The Anniversary and Wolf Parade, f!ghtf!ghtf!ght had a real task trying to discover their sound and, in a few short months, had completed enough material for an EP. Their songs, though difficult to compare to any other band, showed a definite basis in indie rock with catchy hooks and infectious beats. They started playing shows in October 2005 and soon had created some buzz around Ottawa with their danceable sound.
Now, with about 10 songs under their belts, f!ghtf!ghtf!ght is heading into the studio with Yogi at the helm to record an EP. A two week tour is on the horizon in May and June 2006.
And, thus, f!ghtf!ghtf!ght’s journey has begun. |
