After the death of Kurt Cobain, Dave Grohl(Nirvana's Drummer) formed Foo Fighters from material he had been working on while in Nirvana. Dave Grohl had played guitar and written songs since he was a teenager but had kept his song writing to himself.
Before Nirvana, Grohl played drums in the D.C. band called Scream. In 1994 after Cobain's death Grohl booked time at a recording studio and put out a 15 song demo which was comprised of songs from his years of home recording. Record companies quickly got their hands on a few of the 100 copies and began a bidding war. Nate Mendel (bass) and William Goldsmith (drums) from Sunny Day Real Estate and Pat Smear joined Grohl to form Foo Fighters. The name was taken from a secret WWII force that researched UFO's. Capital Records won the bidding war and released Dave Grohl's album of self recordings in 1995 under the name Foo Fighters. By '96 the album had gone platinum with hits like "This Is a Call." In 1997 William Goldsmith left the Foo Fighters and was replaced by Taylor Hawkins. Pat Smear also left the group that year just after they had completed their second album, "The Colour and Shape." In 1999 the band recorded, "There is Nothing Left to Lose", as a three piece. They later added guitarist, Chris Shiflett. In 2002 the Foo Fighters released their 5th album, "One by One." "One by One" proved to be their most polished release to date but didn't have the emotional feel or depth of previous releases.
