The Fooking Sloogs were the longest running DIY unsigned garage band in the history of Rock and Roll. Besides being collectively deaf dumb and blind, the Fookin Sloogs were business illiterates. They preferred 100% of nothing than the offered 10% of something.
If their business wasn’t so cruel and tragic, it would be funny. THEN AGAIN...Maybe it is!
Fookin Sloogs were the next incarnation of the musical adventures of Mick MacMurphy and Vector Collins that began in 1966 when they turned on, tuned up and got out of sight. The bands they formed morphed with the decade that followed, until someone, and we are not certain who, took the brown acid instead of the kool aid and moved the lab to somewhere out there over the rainbows. Finally one day disco reared its ugly head and the party stopped abruptly. With no more gigs, more weddings, births, more deaths and funerals, the lads took straight jobs in Kansas City to rehabilitate themselves. So after a few years in the jar joints, The Fookin Sloogs began their music in the started out in Kansas City , during the friggin winter of 1978. Murphy's reputation was believed to be a terminal medical patient and blues guitar strangler from a dozen bad luck gigs in St Louis. Vector Collin, also a St Louis transplant to K.C, played drums and owned the truck. An agreeable chap, Vector always said “yo”, long before it was popular, and is credited for evolving the language of the hip from "far out" and "groovy".. Vector was mono syllabic even though most thought he was mute. Vector particularly enjoyed hitting things with sticks. Solly Vendecker played bass, played bass!... 'nuf said?? Hyper ballad singer Nyk Rowe was next to join the ranks. Nyk was the near blind love child of Elvis Presley and Tina Turner who abandoned him in a bowling alley in Nevada Missouri. Much of his poetry can still be found on restroom walls in rest stops along the70 interstate in Missouri. In the early days, 1976 Murphy and Rowe found themselves unemployed in area of town where they began playing music as a remedial alternative to being soaked in alcohol and drugs everyday. Murphy and Vector played in a psychedelic jazz band Marvin and the Mercuroids in the Westport and River Quay area. When the band broke up, they met Nyk Rowe performing in a salmon colored jump suit with a dildo attached to his nose, off the back of a flat bed truck in Peculiar Missouri, and thought nothing of it at the time. Once sober, Nyk Rowe would write every word he sang, one at a time, just like you read them. Murphy would defy all odds and expectations... couldn't hear a thing! He was stoned deaf, so he played every note on his guitar by sense of smell. Senseosmella , I think he called it, others called it “the smell of the fella”. Not to be outdone by Rowe, he would play most of his notes one at a time, just as you hear them. Murphys' music was a involuntary reaction to heat and light and smoke in certain bar room and dance club trends of the times, that were ultimately killing the fun in the music and booze scene in Kansas City. During the song The Bartender, they would spike the drinks with an assortment of potions from MK Ultra and Sandoz that would leave the band and patrons passed out in a room full of 60 decible feed back in a chemically induced coma for days at a time. Fortunately for the survival of the club scene, disco proved to be more popular with the young lovers and forever altered the Live Entertainment at the time in history. Left with no place to play, the Fooking Sloogs went into the Studio to grumble. The first recordings were loud enough for the ' wake the dead tour -1980' that landed them in San Francisco just in time for their brand of DIY punk rock.." they used to throw flowers, now they spit on ya if they like ya" herb caen SF Chron 1981. The Fookin Sloogs played forgettable shows every night making the soundtrack to americas' personal apocalypse. They couldn't get a single screening for their film
NO SALT PLEASE ,.. later released in Paris France underground cinema as Escargot Amoreaux Sauvage, featuring nyk rowe as an everyman who sees himself in the reflection of accumulated refuse and cultural garbage as he travels through town in his quest for significance. We all tear up at the scene of him grimacing into a mirror. The Fookin Sloogs later ran a Half Way House for the girlfriends and wives of the local incarcerated. It (the house) was soon discovered to be the wrong half, but by then, the music and behavior was so extreme it actually sent the participants into real recovery programs where they did actually receive some much needed help..
The Fookin Sloogs recorded all their best songs one day and then retired in 1997 after 20 years in the shadows of unrealised greatness, already legend of their imagination collecting fans from around the world, especially non english speaking countries...... and to those who have requested a reunion concert; you have no idea what you are asking for, I don't believe you or any of your friends could afford it. The liabilities alone could bankrupt you... not to mention the flashbacks. Careful what you wish for, as I have been told a young man in Saudi Arabia lost his hands for "being in possession of decadant western media", when it was discovered to be a bootlegged Sloogs music cassette. Enjoy the Sloogs in the privacy of your own home while you still can.
