| "A breath-taking and epic album, which stretches and glides through a cornucopia of musical styles with consummate ease." Terrascope, UK
"...stretches the ethereality of dream pop into blissout, as strings, wordless vocals, and guitar bleed together in swatches of psychedelic color...Function argue convincingly that sometimes you have to leave the planning behind and go on instinct." Pitchfork, USA (Rating: 8.2)
"Almost impossibly beautiful. At 72 minutes long, and incorporating pristine folk, field recordings, pop melodies, jazz-like bursts of dissonance and sampled world music intervals, The Secret Miracle Fountain is immediately arresting" Dusted, USA
"Despite its far flung origins and diverse input, Nicholson's music retains a clear authorial voice and purpose offering a series of panoramic variations, phased drones, vaporous trails, and heavily processed cycles of ebb and flow…" The Wire, UK
Function is the communally based, shape shifting brainchild of Australian native & general globe-trotting nomad Matt Nicholson. The Secret Miracle Fountain is a lush & transcendental rock album recorded & produced in over ten countries - from Sinai, Egypt to Brooklyn, New York; Kyoto, Japan to Venice, Italy - over a 3 ½ year period with the participation of close to 3 dozen friends & musicians. It goes without saying that there is nothing small about the scale or scope of The Secret Miracle Fountain. It's a remarkable introduction to the world at large of a mesmerizing rock album that proves every bit worth the 4 years it took to complete it.
The Secret Miracle Fountain marks the band's first stateside album after a couple lathe cut records, cassettes & smallish cd releases. Featured artists include Chris Smith (Fat Cat, Emperor Jones), Stuart Dempster (New Albion), and Lakshmi Shankar & Subash Chandran, Indian music masters of voice and percussion. |
