Funeral for a Friend consists of Matt Davies (vocals), Kris Roberts (guitar), Darran Smith (Guitar), Gareth Davies (bass), and Ryan Richards (drums). The beginning of Funeral for a Friend began with a band called January thirst. When January Thirst split in December 2001, remaining members formed Funeral for a Friend. The group’s name is generally assumed to have been spawned from the Elton John album under the same title. This is not correct. Actually, the group got their name from a hardcore rock group from Florida, Planes Mistaken For Stars, that had a song entitled, “Funeral for a Friend.” The members, who are all from the Valleys of South Wales, formed the band in early 2002. Only a few months after forming, the group recorded their debut EP entitled Between Order and Model. The EP, which was released on August 12, 2002 was produced and mixed by Joe Gibb (Jane’s Addiction, Catatonia, Leftfield) on Swansea’s Mighty Atoms Label. The group then began touring with bands such as Boy Sets Fire, Finch, and The Prophets. The single, “10:45 Amsterdam Conversations” received a lot of noise. Only six months after the EP’s release, Funeral for a Friend, found themselves showcasing their music in front of top Recording Labels. They chose to sign with Infectious Records (a subsidiary of Warner).
In April 2002 (October 21, 2002 in the United States), Funeral for a Friend released Seven Ways to Scream your Name. The EP contained the single, “This Year’s Most Open Heartbreak.” The video for the song was done by Darren Doane (Blink-182, Jimmy Eat World, Pennywise). The video had a huge amount of airplay on MTV2 and Kerrang!TV. This was also chosen to b the first video to air on Sky TV’s new Scuzz channel.
On July 28, 2003, Funeral for a Friend released their third EP entitled Juneau. That summer they headlined a tour in the United Kingdom. In September that year, the group was chosen to headline for Iron Maiden in the U.K. On October 6, 2003, Funeral for a Friend released their debut album entitled Casually Dressed and Deep into Conversation. The group is expected to become a huge hit as they continue to quickly build a dedicated fan base.
