Gary Gable was born Gary Grebelsky in Akron, Ohio in 1948. He began playing melodies when he was five years old during rare visits to his great-aunt in Cleveland. Gary took piano lessons at the age of nine, starting with a keyboard made of paper. A shy and self-conscious child, Gary was recognized as creatively and intellectually gifted. He studied classical piano on and off for three years before quiting to create his own music. During childhood, he loved to explore the feel and sound of every piano in a local department store. Each spoke to him with its own music. At the age of twelve his father bought him a tape recorder from a pawn shop and Gary began recording some of his music.
Gary graduated from Oberlin College in 1971, with a major in Communications and a minor in Studio Art. At Oberlin he loved his access to every piano, organ and harpsichord in the practice rooms of the conservatory and he worked as an assistant in a film mix house and recording studio in Cleveland, experimenting with the original Moog synthesizer and sixteen-track recording. After temporarily leaving school, he took classes at Harvard University in Visual Studies and the Psychology of Creativity to make up for lost credits and time. While in Cambridge, he worked part time as a driver and caregiver for the inventor of Technicolor, an octogenarian with many patents. Upon returning to Oberlin in Ohio to finish his degree, he was involved in several low budget film projects as actor and producer, including a feature produced in Los Angeles with help from several people at the American Film Institute. For this film, he rented a then-state-of-the-art editing machine from Norman Mailer in New York City and trucked it back to Ohio.
Thanks to his experience with the editing machine and contacts made renting it, Gary got his first job after graduating from college as a film editor for Allen Funt and lived in Manhattan in the 1970's. He edited a Candid Camera ABC Movie of the Week, an ABC Wide World of Entertainment late night TV Special (a Candid Camera 25 year retrospective) and the pilot and first season of the New Candid Camera syndicated series. He left Candid Camera in 1974 to write and return to independent feature film work, but was stricken with Hodgkin's disease in 1975. Gary was treated with radiation at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD in 1976 and has been cancer-free since then.
Unsure of wanting to be in show business, Gary studied computers. Combining his media experience with computers he was a pioneer in computer-based education and interactive simulations for corporate training, working for several years at Control Data Corporation in New York and Minneapolis. Subsequently, Gary worked for twelve years at Arthur Andersen in its global CIO organization developing software, Information Technology and Knowledge Strategies for its world-wide organization. This work also involved needs analysis through visits to several countries in Europe and Asia, and in 2000 resulted in a US Patent for internet and knowledge-sharing-related technology. Subsequently, Gary worked as an executive in technology-strategy and professional services consulting practice development for KPMG in Washington, DC and New York .
Meanwhile, in the 1990's Gary also begain writing and recording music for his CD's in his home studio, exploring orchestral film music, new age, easy listening and pop song structures. Drawn to music for film from his film production and editing experience, Gary's music evokes visuals and affects your mood. While much of the music around us whips you up, Gary's music relaxes you, opening your mind to suggestion, imagery and feelings. Technically, most CD cuts are structured as songs without the words.
After living in Ohio, New York City, Minneapolis, Southwest Florida, and Washington, DC, Gary currently lives in the Atlanta, Georgia area with his beautiful and wonderful wife, Colleen. Currently he is working on his seventh album, "Healing," which will be released some time in 2007.
