Get ready for an emotional roller coaster. GIRL WITHOUT FEAR have created their own self-dubbed organitronic style, fusing organic pop rock and electronic instrumentation. Co-founded by vocalist/songwriter DEMETRIA and producer/songwriter J.D. SHULTZ, together their musical roots are based on a wide spectrum of sounds, ranging from classic to modern rock, electronic pop, funk-inspired beats, and Middle Eastern riffs. This makes for a sassy mix of rhythms and styles, that is ready to burst "like a gum bubble on a safety pin", as described by MARC GOLDSTEIN music reviewer for THE BOOK LA.
Demetria was born the middle child of Greek immigrants in South Brooklyn. At a tender age, she escaped into a secret world through writing journals, poetry and creating art. Although NYC held a deep space in her heart, an instinct to journey west had always been strong. Upon arriving in Hollywood, it was only a couple of months before meeting the missing link and her creative match in local producer and multi-instrumentalist J.D. Shultz. J.D. had already worked with and held the respect of members of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Janes Addiction, and Macy Gray, and also jammed regularly with members of Pearl Jam and Stone Temple Pilot. J.D. always kept his whole being into music, writing a plethora of music and recording his own bands, while maintaining a successful career as a painter. Demetria and J.D. swiftly locked into a musical bond that was explosive and undeniable. This is felt through the dozens of unique songs they have written together, never lacking in inspiration.
After recently completing a record, the two collaborators knew it was time to piece together the perfect band. No small feat in a city of flakes. However the gods were smiling. It wasn't long before classically trained pianist BRIAN CAPPELLO jumped aboard, fresh from New Jersey after bumping into Demetria at a local Brooklyn style Pizzaria. Brian was wearing the right T-shirt (Interpol) to strike her interest that day! Chicago native & bassist MONICA CARTER came on board next, hooking up with Demetria at the Sunset Blvd. strip Virgin Mega store, where in-house MC/ DJ Dave was playing new GIRL WITHOUT FEAR tracks. At the store, Marc Goldstein, a photographer also well-known as the music editor of THE BOOK LA demanded the girls be in a band together due to "a vision of the two of you on stage". The two gregarious gals clicked instantly, both loving early 80's music. Next, the rythm section needed a beat to be complete. GREG COLLISTER instantly blew everyone in the band away, playing the songs right in the pocket with a keen intuition. This credited to hours of of non-stop practice on a farm in Illinois. The super glue that binds this five piece outfit is the desire to eat, sleep, and breath music.
GIRL WITHOUT FEAR is here and wide awake with the energy of the debut record Mix Messages.
