Multi-instrumentalist Glenn Shambroom has explored a wide range of roots-music and jazz styles over the last thirty years. Originally from New Jersey, he spent the 70’s and 80’s working as a guitarist in country and rock & roll bands on the East Coast. By 1985, his focus had shifted, and he worked as a sax player in soul and r&b bands. As a founding member, Shambroom has played guitar and baritone sax with the Boston band The Love Dogs since 1994. The Love Dogs have released four cds of blues, funk, and swing on the ToneCool label, while taking their high energy, good-time brand of r&b on the road throughout the US, Canada, and Europe.
In addition to his work with The Love Dogs, Glenn has released three well-received jazz cds of his own: MAKE ROOM FOR SNAPPY (2000), INCLUDE ME OUT (2003), and his current release BAND MATH.
Of BAND MATH, Shambroom explains, “My cds are pretty much in the ‘straight-ahead’ vein. I’ve used only my own compositions, because my primary interest at this point is in writing and arranging. I’ve taken ideas and inspiration from people like Oliver Nelson and Billy Strayhorn. At the same time, because of my background as a guitarist, there’s a bit of Jimi Hendrix or Chet Atkins in there as well. I try to use novel instrumentation to put across my ideas, and the writing for BAND MATH grew out of my doubling on guitar and sax. The idea was to integrate my interest in jazz, r&b, and rock & roll into something compelling and coherent, featuring those two instruments. Because I’ve got resourceful guys on the cd with me, the project kind of grew into an experiment on instrumentation: What can we do with three guys at a time? With four guys? With five?”
