The Hives consists of Swedish natives, Nicholaus Arson, Chris Dangerous, Dr. Matt Destruction, Vigilante Carlstroem, and Howlin’ Pelle Almqvist. The group formed in 1993 in Fagersta, Sweden. By 1994, they released their debut EP entitled Oh Lord! When? How? Soon after the release of their EP, The Hives signed to Burning Heart Records. In 1997, they released their first, full length album, Barely Legal. The Hives then embarked on their first United States tour. In 1998, The Hives released the EP, A.K.A. – I-D-I-O-T. In 2000, The hives reached mainstream popularity in the United States with the release of Veni, Vidi, Viscious. The album contained the billboard hits: “Hate to Say I Told You So” and “Main Offender.” The group’s popularity grew even more when renowned and respected artists Noel Gallagher (Oasis) and Courtney Love (Hole), praised the band’s work. The hives soon got a deal with Alan McGee’s label, Poptones in 2001. The Hives began touring extensively that year. In the Spring of 2002, The hives released a compilation of previously recorded music, entitled Your New Favorite Band. They then played at both the Reading and Leeds music festivals.
