From the quiet years of 1994 Dan Estrin (guitar), Douglas Robb (vocals) and Markku Lappalainen (bass) had always been close friends.
The trio began to put a band together with strong influences from bands like Tool, Fishbone, Faith No More, with each individual member putting their musical influences into the band ranging from Guns ‘n’ Roses to Trance music.
It was in Agoura Hills, Southern California their suburban hometown, where all their musical influences would soon come together to create music unlike anything before. The band had thought of many events and occurrences that would be great ideas for songs.
As well as a handful of songs already, the band had developed on many musical melodies.
But what is a melodic grunge band without a drummer?
They searched long and hard for a skilled drummer they could rely on as a trustworthy member of their group.
However, shortly after their desperate searches and constant advertising, Chris Hesse immediately replied to their ad and met up with the group to start work on completing a few of their songs.
With the band complete, Hoobastank began transforming their paper to words as they practised constantly through night and day. After a month of efforts and tiring work, in 1995, Hoobastank performed their first gig at “The Roxy” in Los Angeles where their fine efforts had paid off. They band captivated everyone in the audience as their unusual fusion of post-grunge, punk, alternative metal and musical inspirations had proved them successful.
They played numerous tours in California, and moved on to inject Arizona with their addictive melodies. After gaining a lot of recognition through countless tours, Hoobastank saved up enough money to release their first album, ‘They Sure Don’t Make Basketball Shorts Like They Used To’ in 1998. They were soon recognised throughout the globe, in the United States stretching to countries as far as, Brazil, Russia, Israel and the U.K.
After hooking up with Island/Defjam Records, Hoobastank released their debut self-titled album in November 2001. Their unforgettable hits, ‘Crawling In The Dark’, ‘Running Away’, ‘Pieces’ and ‘Remember’ proved the album to be a great achievement. They were known world wide for their amazing abilities to include so many combinations of music into their melodies. After their positive reaction from thousands of fans across the world, and praises from the media, Hoobastank carried out countless amounts of tours that took them to countries all over the world.
Their popularity pushed them towards headlining shows at gigs and local shows while being lined up for some of the major tours of the century. After a long period of infinite tours and shows, Hoobastank returned to the studio to record their next album. ‘The Reason’ was to be an album unlike anything they’ve done before.
