Hot Toddy
Biography
Based in Fredericton, NB, Hot Toddy is Thom Swift (acoustic guitar, dobro, vocals), Joel LeBlanc (electric guitar, harmonica, vocals) and Tom Easley (double bass, vocals). The trio combines an inventive blend of roots, blues and jazz accompanied by mischievous lyrics, unique storytelling and driving rhythms.
In 2004, Hot Toddy released their fifth album, The Salty Sessions, Vol. II. The CD features a strong focus on songwriting, offering 16 original songs that reflect everyday life and the various influences of each band member. “Just about anything inspires us to write,” says Easley. “Artists, love, the weather, travel, a TV show, a good book, seeing something that moves you, all the tools of songwriting are employed by the three of us.” Hot Toddy also adds to their already dynamic sound with guest appearances from pianist Bill Stevenson and drummer Geoff Arsenault.
Like its predecessor, The Salty Sessions, Vol. I, the album was recorded live off-the-floor at Salty Towers in St. Andrews, NB. The building has become a kind of artistic retreat for Hot Toddy in the seven years they have been playing together. “St. Andrews is one of the first places we went to play music and the community embraced us with open arms,” says Swift. “It’s a place of artisans and people who create. For a couple of weeks in June 2003, we immersed ourselves in this creative environment at Salty Towers. The community would come out to encourage us and the focus was purely on the sharing of ideas and creating.”
Refreshed and newly inspired by their recording experience, they soon set out to tour in support of their new album.
The band had long been garnering a reputation for their live show. A combination of high-energy vocals, aggressive guitar strains and heart-stopping instrumentals, each member inputs new ideas into their already impressive mix. “Our mission is to keep things as open and spontaneous as possible,” says Leblanc of the band’s show. “In the seven years we have been together, we have worked out a rapport and a philosophy that we have tenderly developed. We try to get something different out of each evening we perform and we are not always sure what that will be. We thrive on improvisation, audience interaction, listening to each other and creating an experience that is fresh and different.” |
