Started by guitarist Andy Bell of Ride, Hurricane #1 were always on a rollercoaster - great selling singles and albums, but loads of critical backlash. While the band had more structured songs, a different musical style, and a much better, stronger singer than it's predecessor Ride, they never could get out of the shadow of that band's legacy.
H#1 released 2 albums and scores of singles on Creation Records at the end of the 90's, all of which charted. Tracks like Only The Strongest Will Survive, which was remixed by U.N.K.L.E.'s James Lavelle, were distorted guitar & string section-drenched summer anthems for the kids, then soundtracks to car commercials. It was these sort of situations that called their indie credibility into question and caused them no shortage of hassles with the fickle U.K. music press. Through all of this they were undoubtedly one of the more successful bands on Creation, next to Oasis, who ironically ended up bringing around the end of H#1 when Noel and Liam (always huge Ride fans) asked Andy to play bass for them and he agreed. Alex Lowe has since recorded 2 solo records that are available from Pop Renaissance Records (http://www.poprenaissance.com) and he will be touring in the fall.
