Since bursting on to the scene just over a year ago, Hybrasil has come a long way in a short period of time. Formed by a group of friends, the band’s first project was the completion of their own personal recording studio now known as The Clinic. Hybrasil made their live debut in 2004 and have gone on to play most of the best venues throughout Ireland with their self styled brand of “Indietronic”.
On lead vocals and guitar is John Spud Murphy, who performed as bassist with the acclaimed Dublin act Sack, in a previous incarnation before deciding to form Hybrasil. Keith Byrne, who had played drums with a variety of acts in Ireland and the UK, was cajoled into playing guitar and also to lending his vocals to the fray whenever the mood grabs him. Bassist, Neil Nipper Kinsella and drummer Neil Horner had previously played guitar and bass respectively in the garage-band/archetype of insanity that was Obi Wan. Finally, after almost a decade in New York City Joe Kavanagh returned to the land of his forefathers and was handed a synthesiser and sporadic singing duties…Hybrasil was born.
Hybrasil’s explosive live show soon saw their rabid fan base expanding at a tremendous rate. Suddenly Hybrasil were packing a number of the major Dublin venues such as The Gaiety, Crawdaddy and Whelans. These shows were soon followed by acclaimed performances at the IMRO Showcase, Bud Rising Festival and Murphy’s Live 2005 where they won the honour of best band in the Dublin region. IMRO also touted Hybrasil as one of the top 10 Irish bands most likely to succeed in 2005.
A number of high profile gigs also featured in 2005 supporting such Irish rock luminaries as Snow Patrol, The Frank and Walters and Pony Club, whilst the band recently opened for legendary Liverpool act The La’s, for their fist gig in over a decade.
A recent performance in Dublin’s Olympia Theatre as part of the prestigious Hard Working Class Heroes 2005 showcase has only further reinforced the already growing opinion that Hybrasil is one of the most exciting prospects in Irish music today. Sharing the stage with Idlewild, Angela Dorgan, the festival organiser, selected Hybrasil as one of the top three bands at the festival.
The band has also attracted an increasing amount of supporters behind the scenes in the Irish music industry, with their most notable vocal champions being 2FM’s Dan Hegarty, Dave Fanning and Larry Gogan, Today FM’s Alison Curtis and the radio stations Red FM in cork and Beat FM in Waterford.
Having signed a recording contract with the new Irish independent label Fresh Indie Frontal Attack (FIFA) Records, Hybrasil’s highly anticipated debut EP/single We Got Music, will be released nationally on 9 September 2005, distributed by RMG. The band will follow the release by a series of dates throughout Ireland including support slots for Alfie and The Chalets. A number of UK dates will also be announced later in the year. It is only a matter of time before the Hybrasil bomb detonates on the world stage. Do not miss an opportunity to catch them live in 2005.
