Having a rock band back in 1997 (I was the drummer). We were well on our way
to becoming a decent local group when the group parted ways. For some reason I still felt the need
to do something with music. I began kicking around the idea of attempting to write techno music
back in 1999. In 2000 I received a CD full of various techno artist from Germany. I remember listening
to the CD and saying "Thats what I want to do!" Thats when I slowly began writting techno music. Knowing no music theory, just the basics of drums it was a very big struggle for me.
It's been one of my few hobbies in life that I have stuck with. Still to this day I am nothing extraordinary.
But I sure have come a long ways since my first track. Having composed a little over 1,200 beats/songs/riffs, I'm finally
starting to feel a little more comfortable with my music.
I began burning CD's of my music and handing them out. I let my friends listen to them, my girlfriend, family members and anyone else who would give it a listen.
Of course even though they said they thought my music was great, I just figured they were being nice and trying not to hurt my feelings.
In November of 2004 as I joke I submited an email to a record label that was accepting demos. I sent them a few links to my songs
asking for any advice they could give me. I expected them to write back saying something along the lines of don't quit your
day job, or maybe music isn't your thing. To my surprise they saw potential and offered me a contract.
After consulting with a lawyer I was advised not to sign the contract, as the company was still new and probably
wouldn't have the resources to market my music. But that doesn't stop me from doing what I love.
I plan on someday giving it another go and hopefully get another offer from a bigger label. I just hope I don't turn 40 dwelling
on the past saying "I could've been something but I missed it"
Amazingly...what gives me the most trouble still to this day is that thumping drum beat. Any great melody, won't sound great
until that excellent drum beat is there to compliment. It's ironic really, I was a drummer in a rock band, and yet I have troubles
creating good drum beats. I did however really quickly pick up the piano, which later helped me learn some basics of music theory.
Which eventually turned into some decent sounding melodies, as opposed to a jumbled mess of random notes.
