| Indigone Trio
The Montreal-based Indigone Trio plays a striking brand of modern acoustic jazz, using repertoire spanning from Paul Simon to Ornette Coleman, original compositions and standards. Since their formation as a McGill University student group in 2003, the trio has been exploring and expanding their personal and collective musical visions. As a group, they have accompanied great Canadian saxophonist Kirk MacDonald, and have performed widely in the Montreal area. In January 2006, they were the only Canadian student group invited to perform at the International Association of Jazz Education (IAJE) conference in New York City. Their music is influenced by their peers and heroes, ranging from the jazz tradition and classical world to the recent developments of rock, soul and electronica.
David Ryshpan – piano/compositions/arrangements
David Ryshpan is a Toronto-born, Montreal-based pianist, composer and arranger. Born in 1985, he has been playing piano since the age of 6. A graduate of McGill’s Jazz Performance program (2006), he has studied with Toronto and Montreal jazz luminaries such as Brian Rudolf, Brian Dickinson, Jeff Johnston and Rémi Bolduc, among others. He has participated in the 2005 Banff Centre Workshop for Jazz and Creative Music, led by Dave Douglas, and is a current member of the BMI Jazz Composer’s Workshop in New York, led by Jim McNeely and Michael Abene. Having gigged professionally since the age of 14, his performance experience ranges from jazz ensembles small and large to musical theatre pit orchestras to various funk, hip-hop, soul, rock and gospel groups.
Alex Mallett – bass/compositions/arrangements
Hailing from Kansas City, Alex Mallett spent his youth listening to jazz and blues on the radio and his teens learning about this music from some of Kansas City’s finest musicians. After high school, Alex attended McGill University in Montreal, Canada, where he has studied and played with such fine musicians as Guy Boisvert, Brian Hurley, Rémi Bolduc, and André White. A graduate of Jazz Performance at McGill and participant in the 2006 Banff Centre Workshop for Jazz and Creative Music, he is an active freelance musician both in Montreal and Kansas City.
Liam O’Neill – drums/percussion
Liam O'Neill hails from Kelowna, B.C, where he took up the drums at age twelve. Instantly taking to them, he pursued music by attending various jazz workshops and band competitions on the west coast. He received many accolades in his formative years as a drummer, one of them being the prestigious Fraser MacPherson Scholarship in 2003. That same year, Liam began pursuing a degree in Jazz Performance at McGill University, where he had the opportunity to study with such greats as Michel Lambert, Chris McCann, Jim Doxas, and Dave Laing. He also participated in workshops given by Dave Liebman, Carl Allen and Cecil Bridgewater. Liam has already become an in-demand freelance drummer, playing with various musicians and projects in Montreal.
We endeavor to play music without fear - energetic, inventive, alive and awake. Beautiful and crazy. – Geoffrey Keezer
Visions (Stevie Wonder, arr. Ryshpan) – An underrated song with a sentiment that rings far too true, thirty-odd years after Stevie penned it. May we be fortunate enough to realize such a vision in our own lifetimes? It’s looking like we’ll still have to grab our wings and fly away. DRR
Erghen Diado (Petar Lyondev, arr. Ryshpan) – All instrumentalists attempt to recreate the power and immediacy of the human voice. Transcribed from the first volume of Le mystere des voix bulgares (a Bulgarian women’s radio choir), this piece’s beauty lies in its deceptive simplicity. It sounds far more intricate than it actually is. DRR
Love Is the Reason (Alex Mallett) – For Lina. AM
Smacked (David Ryshpan) – The only complete original piece of music I wrote out at Banff in the summer of 2005. Whether the catalyst for creativity was Dave Douglas’ sage advice or avian interference (or a combination of the two), we’ll never know. Credit is due to bassist/composer Michael Bates, who came up with integral arrangement ideas, as well as jokes at my expense. DRR
Shahgely (trad. Egyptian, arr. Ryshpan) – A truly multicultural experience; an Egyptian melody learned in the Rocky Mountains from a Torontonian ex-pat living in Copenhagen. This melody is always a blast to play, and the arrangement is an extension of what developed rather organically at Banff. It’s a souvenir of the door of musical perception that swung wide open. Thanks to Graig Earle and Dylan van der Schyff. DRR
Throughout (Bill Frisell, arr. Ryshpan) – In tribute to a fallen comrade. This piece has had a recurring presence in my life, and represents the cycles of life and of acceptance. I dedicate this to all those who, in their absence, continue to influence and inspire us. DRR
This will be our reply to violence: to make music more intensely, more beautifully, more devotedly than ever before. – Leonard Bernstein
