| Jeffrey, a veteran vocalist whose impressive curriculum vitae is a true “name-dropper” in the history of Dominican commercial music, released his debut album as soloist in 2004. The resounding success of Mi Tierra came as a welcome surprise to many; in some circles, it is considered a glimmer of hope for the triumphant return of elegantly produced merengue. The title track hit the Billboard Charts for Tropical Airplay and the album had substantial sales notwithstanding the absence of multinational distribution. The single “Mi tierra” has been included on numerous domestic and European compilations and is still in hot demand.
“Mi Vida” includes a smattering of covers previously recorded by some of Jeffrey’s personal favorites, such as Ana Gabriel, Juan Gabriel and Marc Anthony. However, this dynamic disc features originals penned by a striking roster of talented Dominican songwriters, including Wascar Brazoban (“Sufriendo de a duro”), Alicia Baroni (“Si te atreviera”) , Carlos Brito (“Si yo me vuelvo a enamorar”), Julian Sarante (“Ni el odio ni la mentira”) Jose Peguero (“Ay la gente”) and Enrique Feliz (“Navidad sin ti”). Among these writers there are several ASCAP award winners as well as authors of numerous works recorded by top tropical artists such as Tito Rojas, Gran Combo, Olga Tañon, Tito Nieves, Joe Veras, Luis Vargas, to name a few.
Jeffrey’s musical producer, affectionately known as “Makumba,” is a talented young bassist and all around great musician. Based in New York City and fascinated by the Big Apple’s mix of culture, Makumba’s youthful approach to arrangement, creative energy and input were key to the success of Mi Tierra. He is featured once again on Mi Vida and has collaborated closely with Jeffrey in carefully selecting a repertoire of hits – songs with great melodies, meaningful lyrics and smoking rhythm. |
