Jerry Cantrell, undoubtedly the best guitarsit of the 80's and 90's was born March 18, 1966 in Tacoma, Washington. Jerry's father, Jerry Senior, fought in the Vietnam war and left Jerry just his mother for a part of his childhood.
And yes, the song "Rooster" was written by Jerry about his pop.
Jerry first picked up a guitar around age of 13 and has his roots in many small Seattle bands. Jerry than became friends with former bassist Mike Starr, who in turn introduced him to drummer Sean Kinney (who was dating Mike's sister). Jerry and the other guys first me Layne at a party and decided to create Alice In Chains in 1987. During recording for the first major album, Jerry was the main songwriter for the band. Jerry's mother, a pianist, died after the release of "Facelift."
Alice in Chains got a chance to open up for Van Halen in September of 1991. This is when the ever famous "skydiving incident" took place, where Jerry, went skydiving with Dave Mustaine of Megadeth and was barely able to get his parachute open. Jokingly "missing my chance at rock immortality." Still touring with Van Halen, Jerry goes hunting with his brother, and forgets that November only has 30 days, missing the concert on December 1. For a day Jerry Cantrell was beleived to be a missing person and got the fliers to boot. The next day he returned and received a calander as a gift from Columbia records.
The ever interesting Jerry Cantrell lost power at his house around the time of the "Jar of Flies" album. Being out in country and needing transport, Jerry tries to open his garage door, but since it's electrically controlled cannot. Jerry writes 20 new songs and nearly starves to death when his electric can opener stops functioning. A few days later, the local Ski Patrol came to his rescue.
After the release of Alice in Chains' "Alice in Chains" album, Jerry went off on his own and released a very good solo CD, including some appearances of his Alice in Chains band mates.

| I would say so, there was probably more Talanted guitar players, but Jerry is my favoirte and i think i would call him the best. | AIC4LIFE | Personally I think he's one of the best guitarists to come out in the last 20 years at least. I saw him called 'The Tony Iommi of the 90's' on another board. I'd call him the Tony Iommi of the 90's AND the 00's. Just not as famous, thankfully. If he was he'd have the sellout label on him, plus all the little girls who like john mayer would say 'oh I LOVE him' after they heard one song, then after they heard his other songs and the AIC songs they'd say 'he's such a sellout' or something of the sort. I'm GLAD his kind of music isnt popular. | big-k | I think Jerry is way too hardcore for these "I love John Mayer" kinda girls who are problaby obssessed with boybands as well hahahaah anyway Jerry is famous to anyone who really knows rock. If you're in the bandwagon.. you'll probalby have no idea who he is. I think he should get a lot more
of the credit he deserves, but i do think he understands that fame isnt everything and the importance of NOT SELLING OUT
Any true rock fan will tell you he is definately the best guitarist of the 90s.
THE HOTTEST ONE TOO! ROCK ON JERRY!! | hells_angel | I'm speaking of certain Boggy Depot songs, such as Settling Down. But your right, he is much harder than john mayer etc. Parts of Degradation Trip(i'm talking about the real version, vol. 1&2) made it sound almost like the Alice album that never was, except that Jerry's voice will never replace Layne's. He's amazing on solo, really he's about as good as he was with AIC, but that album really does sound like it was an effort to relive those days. Thats just me.
And on the side, as I watched a rerun of VH1's 100 Greatest Artists In Hard Rock, when they showed the AIC section(number 36 I think), at least one of the people interviewed said that Jerry was the best guitarist to come out of the eighties and ninties. They even had an interview clip with Jerry himself(he had the thing going where he has the really long hair, some beard, and the mustache that lopes down to the chin. The DT-era look. | big-k | Thats pretty cool, I don't really like his solo stuff though, but whatever. Out of curiosity who was number 1 on that list? | riff_master | If I had checked this thread earlier I would have posted that. Anyways, thats the list. I'm glad AIC and STP made better than Rolling Stones, i've never liked them. Black Sabbath deserved the #3 spot. I'm just glad The Beatles werent on there. | big-k | I don't think the Beatles were considered hard rock,(the genres they belonged to are)pop-rock, classic rock, british invasion, and psychedelic. So they couldn't have been hard rock. | riff_master | | | |
