The band Jet stems from the suburbs of Melbourne, Australia. The group consists of Nic Cester (guitar, vocals), Chris Cester (drums, vocals), Cam Muncey (guitar, vocals), and Mark Wilson (bass). Nic and Chris are brothers. Nic is three years older than Chris. Whiel growing up, both brothers hated Grunge music. They felt it was overly depressing, and they vowed to make music than was more related to the roots of Rock N’ Roll. After the group formed, Jet immediately began touring throughout Australia. They soon released a debut EP entitled The Dirty Sweet. At first, the group released 1,000 EPs only in Australia. It soon sold-out. They then released 1,000 more with the same outcome. Jet then signed to Elektra Records.
Jet’s debut album, Get born, was released on October 7, 2003. The album, which was recorded at LA’ Sunset Studios, was produced by Dave Sardy (Marilyn Manson, The Dandy Warhols). Two tracks from the album that have been critically acclaimed are: “Get What You need” and “Get me Out of Here.” The single, “Are You Gonna Be My Girl” was on the Billboard Charts in December 2003 and continues to receive attention from MTV and MTV2.
The band members wanted the band to be upbeat. Chris Cester stated: “I like the idea of Get Born having two meanings. Like ‘Rubber Soul.’ It’s basically a reminder to forget your problems and celebrate the moment instead. It’s a rejection of all those feelings of negativity or depression you might get. It’s a heartfelt thing, and that’s where the primal energy comes through the music.”
At every concert, Jet does a cover of the Elvis Presley hit, “That’s Alright Mamma.” Recently, Jet was also picked by the Rolling Stones to open on their Australian tour. Jet’s influences are The Kinks, Oasis, and AcC/DC.
