Steel Train Blues - rough video demo
Hi and a Happy New Year to everyone here on iSound!
I'm working on songs for an album - provisional release April/May 2008. There will be 10-12 songs on it depending on how happy I am with the balance etc. Some will be me doing a straight acoustic guitar/vocal; on others I shall be joined my other musicians. Once we nail down the songs we'll head to the studio, ideally to catch the vibe in one take. I'm not a fan of backing tracks, I prefer the stripped-down live feel
The song on the video I wrote earlier this year and a friend filmed it just so I could remember what I did and when!
So, it's a bit rough and definitely wouldn't win awards for sound or picture quality, but it will give my iSound friends who have been asking about progress an idea of what's to come.
The mandolin player is Dave Allen, ex Canadian band The Mahones and the Pat Temple Band |

Guitarist and singer/songwriter Jet Brennan is a graduate of the School of bars and busking. Uncompromisingly plain but never simple, his songs are delivered in a stripped-down style with a Celtic lilt.
From a Scots/Irish background, Jet grew up to the sound of Irish airs, Scottish reels and pipe bands. Originally a drummer, he switched to guitar at the age of fifteen. Moving to England in his late teens, Jet made his living playing rhythm guitar in local bands with a Neil Young, Steve Earle, John Prine etc repertoire of covers.
He discovered that he had a knack for writing songs that people enjoyed hearing and branched out as a solo artist, touring Ireland and Scotland on foot (quote 'I don't do driving!').
In 1996 Jet won the UK Voice of The Year contest, breaking with tradition by performing his own composition, Easy Morning, rather than a cover song. The song attracted attention and led to appearances on BBC Radio's Folk On Two and local radio stations.
Over the past few years Jet has concentrated on writing new material and armed with his trusty Martin, headed out on the road to test them out.
Jet's Cruel Coincidence is an uptempo fingerstyle guitar plus vocal that had audiences dancing and chanting the chorus in Brittany earlier this year.
His track, Hashish To Ashes, a finger-picked slow tempo country number has been described as a three handkerchief production! Listen and weep!!

New Song - Black Is The Colour
This is a traditional Scottish song that I first learned in my busking days. It's a timeless tune that goes down well wherever i play it and I decided it was time to get my version recorded. Hope you like it! Cheers, Jet

Hashish To Ashes Hits The Right Note!
Just heard that one of my songs, Hashish To Ashes, got to the semifinals of the UK Songwriters' Contest. I'm pretty pleased as it's the first time I've entered a competition for songwriting rather than for performance. Somehow I'm not expecting Simon Cowell to come knocking at my door!
After the Brittany and Ireland gigs I'm back home working on a new batch of songs with ideas that came into my head as I was travelling. And yes, I am still working away at the mandolin - just love the sounds that you can get. Cheers, Jet

Hashish To Ashes
To commemorate the introduction of the ban on smoking in public venues in England, I feel it is fitting to upload my latest song - Hashish To Ashes. I shall miss those fug-filled bars and spluttering audiences and wonder whether it also spells the end of waving cigarette lighters during sad songs. Or maybe they were always just trying to set fire to the stage. I shall never know.

New song - Cruel Coincidence
Hi all,
It's been a hectic Easter - been gigging in Brittany. Thanks Patrice for sorting out the venue in Lannion - last minute panics are what we're used to!!
Finally got Cruel Coincidence mastered - it's a live recording, acoustic guitar plus vocal. This song has been going down really well live. Hope you enjoy it.
Watch out for Hashish to Ashes, new track coming next! Just putting some final touches to it.
Still listening to a lot of bluegrass and Jacques Brel - great combination.

Heart of Mine remastered
Hi all,
Been very busy these past few weeks. Firstly I was getting used to the new mandolin, then had the frustrating experience with the recording studio. Then I got hit by this wave of creativity (must be because it's Spring!) and got to work on a batch of new songs. Very pleased with one called "Cruel Coincidence". Working on master tape now. Watch this space!
Now I can concentrate on the new album!

Two steps forward, one step back
I finally got around to recording Steel Train Blues, using a new studio. What a disaster! You go in with high hopes and reasonably high expectations - after all you're paying. You get all the flannel: great song, great sound, mate etc. And then you get the master and it's terrible - overproduced, woolly sound, the song has been butchered. First time it's happened to me and I was not happy!!
However, now for the bright side. Agreement has been reached for our household to acquire a home recording studio to save a lot of hassle. Looking at Korg PXR4 at the moment - anyone have any experience of their recording equipment?

Lost Weekend
The new mandolin finally arrived, the postal delivery having been delayed by the immense snowfall that paralysed the south of England - that's all of 3"! A mere sprinkle for a true Scot.
Anyway, the inclement weather has been a great excuse for hanging around this weekend getting used to Gwendolyn the Mandolin's little quirks. It's got a fine tone and timbre, great light and bright action, an all-round little beauty. Thanks to Andy from Devon for letting it go.
Steel Train Blues has been shunted into a siding for the moment, I'm afraid, but like a tasty stew, it will probably be better for being on the back burner for a while. I find that if I tuck a new song away for a few weeks or so, I can listen to it with more critical ears before recording.
Well, it works for me anyway.
Still listening my way through a bluegrass compilation plus a great Zydeco CD - a new sound to me that knocks the old eightsome reel into next week!

New song - Heart of Mine
Hi,
This is the song that Marie from Dublin remembered. I found an old live tape recording of it and we've re-recorded it onto the PC. It's raw but has a certain quality - like an old LP! Feedback appreciated.
So Marie, I expect to see you dancing down Grafton Street again one day.

Hi everyone,
Thanks again - the views and plays keep going up. Someone emailed me from Dublin. She remembered me from when I was busking in Grafton Street in 2000 and wanted to know about a song they had heard me sing. The melody had stuck in her head but she couldn't remember the lyrics. The song is called 'Heart of Mine' and I'll be uploading it in the next few days.
(p.s. Marie, I do remember you and your colleagues dancing along to the song outside the chemist where you worked!. Thanks for the pennies ....).
And of course, anyone else is welcome to download it for free.

January ramblings!
Hi,
Thanks for all the listens and plays - it's very encouraging.
Just working on a couple of new songs - ones a bluesy number. Once we've got the hang of the new camcorder I'll be posting a video performance on the site.
I've had a "listening" week. I'm really impressed by an Australian band called Wallis and Matilda. They have set the poems of AB 'Banjo' Paterson to music and you can almost taste the dust of the Outback.
Found a Canadian guy called Don Charbonneau on iSound - another good story song writer with memorable melodies - good artist and fisherman as well!
Also got CD of Alan Stivell - Breton folk rock, and a load of bluegrass tunes, including the great Bill Monroe.
Now I've got to get my head down and get back to my own stuff.

Happy New Year!
As a Scot long exiled in England it's at this time of the year that I most miss my "hame country". However hard they try, the English just don't do Hogmanay! Having said that, I've just watched some fantastic fireworks lighting up the hills.
To whoever is reading this, I'll raise a glass of the finest malt to you and wish you a Happy New Year
