| At just 25, Jon Hopkins seems to have the world at his feet. He has two critically acclaimed albums under this belt, he’s a favourite of TV music supervisors pm both sides of the Atlantic and he’s regularly talked about in the same breath as Brian Eno, William Orbit, Moby, Massive Attack and Mike Oldfield. Mr Hopkins has a lot to live up to.
Opalescent, Jon’s impressive debut album was released in 2001 on Absolute Zero, an imprint of one of the UK’s most exciting and fiercely independent record labels, Just Music. The Evening Standard called it ‘a stunning debut album…it glitters where other chill-out albums are cloudy’, ‘a beautifully realised debut…which will delight and lovers of beautiful music’ gushed The Guardian, whilst The Independent On Sunday said that ‘somehow Hopkins makes it sound classic not cliched’.
His follow up album, Contact Note, enjoyed similarly enthusiastic reviews, ‘chill out incarnate’ announced The Sunday Telegraph, and helped to establish Jon as a ‘genius in the making’ and ‘ambient’s best kept secret’.
Born in South West London Jon started playing piano at the age of five and by twelve he was studying piano at the Royal College of Music. His lifelong infatuation with film (David Lynch being his favourite director) can be detected on both of his albums which literally ooze filmcore ambience. Add to this the polished production, ethereal vocals, intricate rhythm patterns and atmospheric piano melodies and you have an innovative and inspiring electronica sound which it’s difficult not to be seduced by. It is perhaps this cinematic quality of Jon’s music which has helped him achieve so much success in TV and film. In addition to various adverts his music has featured heavily on Sex and the City introducing him to a global audience.
As well as being a gifted musician and songwriter Jon’s talents as a producer and remixer are also in high demand. New and recent projects include Keane, Frou Frou, King Creosote, Chris Coco, Bird, Belle, Mozez (Zero 7), Deepest Blue, Magnetephone, Clarksville and Noel Hogan’s Mono Band.
As well as working on his third solo album and a new dance EP, Jon also manages to find time to collaborate with Brian Eno and Imogen Heap, produce label-mate Arborise as well as performing his stunning live dance set at events around the UK.
