Jorge Chaminé

One of the most original baritones of our times, Jorge Chaminé was born in Porto of Spanish and Portuguese parentage, and began his musical studies ( piano, cello, guitar, conducting) at an early age.
After studying law at Coimbra University, he decided to become a singer and received a scholarship from the Gulbenkian Foundation to further his studies in Madrid with Lola Rodríguez de Aragón, in Paris with Jean Pierre Blivet, in Munich with Hans Hotter and in NYC with Daniel Ferro (Juilliard School),. He also received professional guidance from Teresa Berganza.
Recent engagements include performances as an opera baritone with Seiji Ozawa and the Boston Symphony Orchestra (with whom he made his Carnegie Hall debut), as well as concerts with the London Symphony Orchestra, the Czech Philharmonic, the Berlin Symphony, the Ensemble Intercontemporain, etc. In 1988, he won the Menuhin Foundation Award which led him to perform internationally under the direction of Yehudi Menuhin .He has appeared with Claudio Scimone, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, Placido Domingo, Michel Corboz, Ros Marbà, etc., and appeared in opera performances and concerts alongside Mirella Freni, Montserrat Caballé and Teresa Berganza.
He is also considered as one of the most interesting recital performers : he sings every season in leading venues including Carnegie Hall, Theâtre des Champs-Elysées, Concertgebouw, Gulbenkian and at leading international music festivals. He is equally at home in the English, French, German, Russian, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese languages and repertory.
He has given the first performance of works, some of which were especially written for him, by Bussotti, Kurtag, Xenakis, Lenot, Markeas, Schwarz, Petit, de Pablo, Vlad,…
He is a regular performer of tango, boleros, gypsy songs, fado and the songs of V. de Moraes & Jobim - the music and languages of his own origins. His record of Tangos met with critical acclaim worldwide and won several awards. He has recorded for Lyrinx, RCA, Harmonia Mundi, Naïve and BMG.
Jorge Chaminé has won a number of honours, prices and awards. He was awarded a Human Rights Medal from UNESCO, in recognition for his work for abandoned children.
He is frequently invited as a guest teacher and gives master classes in a number of music academies in Europe and USA. He is at the origin of a workshop for musicians of all disciplines which is held regularly at the Spanish College in Paris since 2001 ( since then, more than 200 musicians from 46 nationalities had studied with him).
He regularly works in Duo with pianist Marie-Françoise Bucquet.
Jorge Chaminé has been involved in the peace process in Middle East and last May at the Unesco in Paris he was nominated Good Will Ambassador of the Music in ME (Music in Middle East) organisation.
