And so here we are. Sipping our drinks, laughing at the anecdotes of friends, and watching the leaves slowly disappear from the trees. It is late 2007, and it is a time of change. The harvest is complete, winter is approaching, and the Canadian music scene is going to get a sparkling injection of raw, stunningly assaulting musical prowess.
Yes, it's true. Kayla Luky is about to release her third full length album.
What this means for music aficionados around the country, and indeed wherever amps and speakers are legal, is that winter is soon to be given a brand new soul from a radiant young woman hailing from the edge of the prairies.
Ever since teaching herself the art of singing and songwriting (and playing an undeniably heartfelt guitar) at the tender age of thirteen, Winnipeg's Kayla Luky has been a staple within the prairie music scene. It comes as no surprise, then, that this much anticipated third release has an already formidable legacy to live up to.
Audiences and critics alike have recognized Kayla's incomparable potential all the way along her journey from the isolated country to the Big City. After landing her first performance in her rural elementary school, Miss Luky has since played countless shows and festivals across the land. Her stage repertoire, coupled with the strength of her first two albums, has led to both media attention and a large sea of much sought – after bookings.
Kayla Luky has been heralded in newspapers, interviewed on CBC national radio, and has even performed live on a prominent Manitoba television program. Her powerful, unique showings at Manitoba's renowned Countryfest and Toronto's acclaimed NXNE festival only furthered the celebration that has always surrounded this challenging musician.
There are several reasons why Kayla Luky has enjoyed so much success for a simple country gal. Some critics have cited her nonchalant stage demeanor, others her obvious determination and artistic zeal. But for this observer, everything is distilled unto the pure music…. Kayla's range is impressive. A natural vocalist with honest lyrics, she has taken the Manitoba folk scene to a new level of integrity and style. Her third album will only solidify this reputation.
Yet there is more to Kayla Luky's music than merely her utterly seductive voice, or her emotionally – charged passages. There is an overarching technical aspect that must be recognized as well. Luky's songs appear to seamlessly travel from sharp and minimalist to loud and proficiently complex. On stage one seemingly simple folk ballad will be followed by an impressive epic storm, with Kayla harmonizing with herself whilst playing her own accompanying instruments, all to the cheers of the crowd. She is acoustic. She is sweet. She is loud. And she writes and composes it all herself. To add to this auditory cocktail we find that this third release was recorded live in the studio in one take. No mixing and mashing, just solidified heart and a little bit of bite. Thus, Kayla is technical wizardry - meets – soulful crooning – meets - crisp guitar maneuvering. In essence, she is like the perfectly mixed drink.
Yes, in this writer's opinion, the best change that happens this winter shall be the one occurring in the Canadian music arena. Kayla Luky's third release will be a breath of fresh air into the static throes of grey radio noise. So sip your drink, chat with your friends, walk to the stereo and throw on some brazen folk rock with some bloody soul. You'll be glad you did.
