Kelis Rogers grew up in Harlem, New York. Her father was a jazz musician and minister. Although her father was a musician, it was her mother who encouraged Kelis to pursue music. While growing up she performed in the Harlem Boys Choir and had violin lessons. At sixteen years old, the singer left home to pursue music. Four years later, at the age of 20, she had a contract with Virgin Records. In 1999, Kelis received interest after rapping with Ol’ Dirty Bastard on his single, “Got Your Money.” In 1999, her debut album, Kaleidoscope, was released. In 2003, she released a billboard chart notable single, ‘Milkshake.”
