The quartet that came together and created Killswitch Engage already had strong foundations in a fan base. Mike D'Antonio (bass) was the main man in a band called overcast. He was the lead songwriter and generally led the band. On the splitting of the group D’Antonio wanted to find a set of musicians that would be able to incorporate the extremes of the heaviest metal to the most beautiful melodies. During the summer of 1999, D'Antonio discovered Adam Dutkiewitz, who was the drummer for a band called Aftershock and Joel Stroetzela also a member of the same outfit. Jesse Leach, vocalist for Corrin and Nothing Stays Gold joined amd they became Killswitch engage.
Killswitch Engage made its debut by opening for In Flames during their tour. The Ferret label heard this and were impressed by the way the extremes of music were combined. Ferret released Killswitch Engage's debut album in June 2000 and it immediately began capturing rave reviews.
With their heavy riffery low growls mixed with the sweet sounding voices the album took the genre by storm. Mainly the riffs would chug along at a high pace with everyone else keeping up with the guitar. The intesity does not go away!
During 2001, the band recorded a song that was to be placed on a live album that featured other bands with the heavy aspect of music. This song was called Numbered Days. This song later featured on the album Alive or Just Breathing. Recorded at the Zing Studio in Westfield, MA. The album includes favourites such as "Self-Revolution," "Just Barely Breathing," and a re-recorded version of "Temple From the Within."
After this the band took a strange twist. Losing members and gaining others they went back into the studio and recorded the recent release (2004) END OF HEARTACHE. This album again featured the extremes but the songs appear to have a greater depth. Especially the title track is almost epic! No doubt with the renewed vigour of the band with chopping and changing members they will go on and release more albums with the same depth and quality of this recent release.
