It started one day in gymnastics class. Mercedes Lander, still in high school, met Fallon Bowman incidentally. Both were into the same music: Nirvana, Silverchair, Pink Floyd, etc. and wanted to be in a rock band. They began to play Nirvana songs in a garage, when eventually they teamed up with Mercedes' sister Morgan, who had a gifted and talented voice. By the time they found bassist Talena, Kittie had been set in stone. They became a hit at their high school, in which at the time, pop acts like Britney Spears were getting big. The members of Kittie strayed from the pop crowd, they knew they were all for the heavy metal. By January of 2000, their debut album Spit was released from their Canadian label, Ng Records. The songs involved hate, betrayal, rape, suicide, and other gritty themes the girls had encountered at some point in their lives. The following summer, Kittie was put on the 2nd stage at Ozzfest, along with bands such as Soulfly and Taproot. Proving to be one of the most popular bands there, their song "Suck" was put onto the Ozzfest live compilation album. By 2001, Kittie was set to work on their next album. Then shadows began to fall on the band: they stopped speaking to each other for a short time, due to an argument. No one knew what was to come for the band. By August 2001, Fallon Bowman spoke up and decided to leave the band, in pursuit of a solo career, along the lines of a Rage Against The Machine-ish project. A few months later, November 2001, Kittie released their second album, Oracle with the help of GGGarth Richardson (Mudvayne, Chevelle). This album was set to be more mature, with Morgan's new riffs, visual lyrics, and entrancing melodies. Their first single from the new album, "What I Always Wanted", debuted on MTV, and metal fans bought the record. Kittie thought that they had overcome some of their greatest obstacles, though they were wrong. By early 2002, bassist Talena Atfield became the second member to walk away, in hopes of something new. There weren't any members to cover for her this time around. So, instead of giving up, Morgan and Mercedes began to search for a new bass player, where they found ex-Spine's Jennifer Arroyo. Jennifer was already a fan of Kittie, and learning the parts wasn't that hard for her. Around the time, "Run Like Hell" and "Pain" began to air on radio stations, and live music videos were shot. In May came the mellow, harmonic "In Winter", which became popular on rock radio shows such as hardDrive w/Lou Brutus. The summer came, and Kittie came back to Ozzfest for their second time, playing a few shows here and there, getting prepared for their EP release. By November, Kittie was done with the Safe EP, and it was released, featuring a KMFDM remix of "Safe"; a radio edit of "Safe"; live recordings of "No Name", "Severed", "What I Always Wanted", "In Winter", and "Pain"; and live footage of "Wolves", "Charlotte", and "Mouthful of Poison". It is now February 2003, and Morgan, Mercedes, and Jennifer are working on material for their upcoming release. A release date is yet to be scheduled, but it's worth the wait.
