*Remembering 1968* 1968---I was 13---my brother’s bedroom---he placed a set of headphones on my ears (the first stereo headphones I can recall) and said, “Listen to this sis”. It was Lee Michaels’ first and I was hooked. Just introduced to The Beatles four years prior, this was different. My bodacious brother Bubba would’ve been 55 this past January 3, and he thought that Lee and Frosty hung the moon. Actually, I still have all of his albums and 8-tracks, used to the hilt of course. In our minds Lee Michaels never was a “California” thing, he made it into deep south Texas years ago and was the highlight of many parties and bottle rocket wars at the Levy...LOL...fun, wild days. I’m completely amazed at how many people, including musicians that are unaware of the roots or the complexity of this two-man band, who in my humble opinion were and still are the best. It is true that some things only happen once and I urge people whenever I can to try this most delightful, unique musical experience. I have long-term friendships with several people that love Lee’s music. It gets cranked up on my 800 SS at every BBQ.
And hey, I’ve heard mixed reviews on ‘Absolute Lee’. I’ve also noticed that it’s not being offered at this time. Personally, I love it, it takes a few spins, but to say that it’s not Lee or that it's a drastic change? That would be like me telling an old friend not to grow. Yes, I have it, hopefully it will be re-released cuz ya ain’t gettin’ mine!
Lee you’re a soul hero. Keep that lovely grin and I hope this finds you as well and as happy as you can be!!
