“AudioBioGraphical” is the debut solo studio album from Liz Berlin, founding member of Island Def Jam's multi-platinum selling group, Rusted Root.
The tracks on “AudioBioGraphical” find Liz front and center as a standout voice within an ever-changing palette of textures, instruments, loops and moods. Liz breaks new ground in this remarkable album moving effortlessly through and around genres. Along with writing and performing the tracks that make up “AudioBioGraphical”, Liz got her fingers dirty behind the scenes by participating in the engineering and production facets, sometimes wholly -sometimes a collaborative effort. “A good song leaves you thirsty,” she says when asked about her approach to production. “A good song takes a huge effort to get out of your mind, whether it's the beat, the chorus hook or that crazy-ass sound that you can't figure out what it is. The placement of every sound, the delivery of every line, every word, every syllable is important. It's these things that keeps a song spinning around in your head for hours...or years.”
Notable guest musicians grace this effort including Gary Shider of Parliament Funkadelic with his soulful vocal contribution to “Ask”. Soma Mestizo's Christianne Leach is featured on the first track “Love You” as well as Crisis Car's Frank Spadafora adding vocals to the serene yet disturbing “Souvenir,” which also features New Invisible Joy's Mike Gaydos with his signature guitar landscape. Core musicians on the album include Ford Thurston, Erik Cirelli and Chris Lohr (The Yards) on electric guitars with drummers Matt Vucic and Frank Marcello. Also, Megan Williams and Weldon Anderson fuse on violin and upright double bass. Mike Speranzo adds a solid variety of sounds and feels at times verging on hip-hop with his tasty guitar, bass, banjo and programming. Speranzo took the helm on the production of “Monster” and “Ask” along with Mr. Smalls' producer/engineer Larry Luther (Anti-Flag, 50 Cent, Black Eyed Peas, Keller Williams, Ryan Adams). The stunning close of the album feature's Liz's twin sister, Katie Kelly, on the a capella duet “Evening Prayer” that they have been performing together since the age of four.
“AudioBioGraphical” is the culmination of five years of recording and production in and around her tours with Rusted Root and her many other endeavors. She is a founding partner of Pittsburgh's “Mr. Smalls Theatre-Recording Studios-SkateParks” empire and point person of its non-profit offshoot Creative.Life.Support. From graphic design and video production to co-writing and producing original hip-hop, punk and pop music with high school aged musicians through C.L.S's recording classes and band camps, these years have been a time of expansion for her.
With the release of “AudioBioGraphical”, Liz Berlin has set the stage for the next chapter in her creative and musical life. This album marks a significant evolution for Liz as an artist, audio engineer and producer, and it will most certainly propel her growth into a prominent solo career.
“Audiobiographical” is very straightforward and there is a freshness to that. The seductive quality about Liz Berlin's work comes through her voice but her lyrics are heavy hitting, peeling back the layers of life and relationships, peering through the Pandora's box with no regrets like eve eating that so called apple… it implies a sweetness but the irony is the darkness”
