Hailing from the East Anglia suburbs, UK, The Marvelous formerly King Billy and the Marvelous are a band with their ears wide open to an assortment of sonic delights. A worldly bag of influences which have been engraved into the heart, mind and soul of the band which include innovators such as: The Clash, Funkadelic, Toots & The Maytals, Creedence Clearwater Revival, David Bowie, The Heptones, Cypress Hill, Captain Beefheart and Tom Waits. With such a diverse record collection between them the fusion of genres is an inevitable factor of the bands overall sound.
Expect to hear Rockabilly rhythms; Reggae one-drop’s and solid Hip-Hop grooves from Sticky on Bass and Dooie on Drums who together also known as brothers Lee and Craig Turner produce a soulful rhythm section which is the backbone of The Marvelous. Jameson and Fifty Benny also known as Jamie Woodhouse and Ben Dorriety complete the line up with their unique blend of vintage wizardry and hypnotic hooks on rhythm and lead guitar.
Writing duties are equally shared between the band who will often conjure up songs from moments of pure genius whilst together or on their own, the key to their sound is the connection of likeminded protégés that all share the same vision. Lee, Jamie and Craig whose distinct voices provide well thought out non-conventional whoops, hollers and harmonies aplenty plus a lot more demanding shenanigans that are apparent in the vocal arrangements throughout.
Moving onto their live performances the band have been ‘on the road’ now for almost two years, They have rocketed independently to the forefront of the UK's live music scene, seeing them support Hard-Fi, Bluetones and The Dogs plus win the coveted ‘Best Band In East Anglia’ award in 2005, the band has continued to move relentlessly forward to the current day which has seen them headlining such prestigious venues as:
The Waterats, Kings Cross, The Dublin Castle, Camden, The Hope & Anchor, Islington, Sound Republic, Leicester Square, The Volkswagen, Whitenoise Festival, Norfolk, The Waterfront, Norwich, The Liverpool Academy, The Barfly, Liverpool, The Zanzibar, Liverpool, The Magnet, Liverpool, Leeds University.
During 2005 the band had been noticed, and various A&R scouts from major labels had been seen at repeated gigs but were deterred by the unconventional approach the band have, mainly two Lead Vocals. One person who wasn’t distracted by this was Sativa Records producer Nat Clarxon (NJC) who witnessed the band live for the first time early on in 2005 and was hooked straight away. Nat approached the band with an open mind and proposed going into the studio to begin producing their debut single with a view to recording an album. Their debut single ‘Shakedown & Never Too Late’ that was recorded and produced at Keynote Studios, Reading by Nat was released independently to critical acclaim. It was at this point that the band realized that a name change would be inevitable based on the feedback from various members of the press, over misunderstanding about where the band got their name from: Lee says “A lot of people around the country have asked - Why the name 'King Billy and the Marvelous' and where did it come from? Basically the band was inspired by two men’s attitudes in standing up for what you believe in. Namely Aboriginal man Jimmy Clements (1847-1927) also known as ‘King Billy’ was famous for standing outside Old Parliament House in Canberra, Australia in 1927 to protest for his aboriginal rights along with his friend ‘The Marvelous’. We did not take our name from the protestant ‘King Billy’ from Scotland, which is were the confusion started”.
After streamlining their operations and accepting the name change the Band have been concentrating all their efforts and energies on recording their highly anticipated debut album SUBSTANCE & RHYTHMS with kaleidoscopic producer Nat Clarxon at the helm. With the emphasis on capturing their unique songs live like the records they love The Marvelous hope to unleash this in time for the summer of 2007. The Marvelous are the musical polyglot of modern day bands and are in high demand, the future will only present the fruits of their hard work, so watch out for them in 2007……..
