"Somewhere between the gritty coke raps of The Clipse and the militant black power stance of Dead Prez lies the substance and style of Merc Versus...solid lyrical skills to go with a smooth, low-key flow...The production often manages to create a menacing, intricate, backdrop. It's hard to knock much on THE WORD."
-Ben Kreider, All Access (The Star Press, Indiana)
Merc Versus. The artist that holds this title is only a representation of the greater movement... The culmination of this individual's musical ability and philosophical depth are manifested via his moving scores and compositions. Merc Versus is without a doubt one of the most unique members of the hip-hop nation based in the state of Indiana. Selections such as "You Know" and "Lust" attest to this fact.
THE WORD is a definitive concept album, exploring the far reaches of both the positive and negative sides of the human psyche and condition. Featuring production by DJ Hezekiah, SPI, and Merc Versus himself, this album is destined to become an underground classic for the midwest hip hop scene. Punctuated by powerful poetry and lyrics from Mr. Mo' Man, A Man Called Relik, and Yung Seen, THE WORD is a solid debut and the first release from the up-and-coming, Indiana-based company known as Invisible Inc Multimedia.
Merc Versus' style and sound has been compared to such diverse artists as Wu-Tang Clan, A Tribe Called Quest, The Roots, Common, Outkast, Wyclef Jean, and Mobb Deep. Some of Merc Versus' inspirations include late reggae superstar (and former Wailers member) Peter Tosh, rasta punk band Bad Brains, old school hip hop veteran Kool G Rap, former Dr. Dre protege' The D.O.C., and the late great soul singer Sam Cooke. A ten-year veteran of his local hip hop scene, Merc Versus is a member of a collective of independent underground hip hop recording artists known as the New Hip Hop Movement. Based in East Central Indiana, this crew consists of Merc Versus, Kutthroats, Dodge City Mercenaries, DJ Epitaph, and Trigga Team.
