MISTA FAT
“Who That is,“ is the debut single and title track from City Slick Entertainment’s recording artist, Mista Fat. The dynamically talented writer/producer Mista Fat is a throwback to what hip hop use to be, raw, energetic and explosive. Don’t get it twisted, the name doesn’t designate body dimension, the name simply means Mista Fantastic all the time!
Born and raise South Memphis, home of the legendary musical powerhouse Stax Records, Mista Fat follows in the traditions of many great Memphis artist by conveying music in a very emotional and infectious manner. Surrounded by typical hood pariahs that seem to snatch the life of many of his friends. Mista Fat quickly found solitude in music. Growing up listening to 8Ball and MJG, 3-6 Mafia , Player Fly, Isaac Haynes and of course Memphis favorite Willie Hutch. In the midst of street decadence and constant hustles of D Boys, Mista Fat played Basketball and wrote raps. Wanting to stunt like the hustlers in the streets Mista Fat also dipped on the street and got his hustle on. In spite of many days and nights working in the trap, Mista Fat earned a scholarship playing basketball.
Mista Fat attended a Junior College in Kansas, he spent more time hanging in the hood instead of perfecting his crossover. Mista Fat also traded in his jump shot for a position on the block running point on the streets. After many arrest and financial setbacks, Mista Fat decided to purchase a one way ticket on a greyhound bus and head home to Memphis, TN. On that bus ride Mista Fat decided that his first love of playing ball was derailed but he would not let his passion for music fall by the wayside. Writing on the bus ride home Mista Fat composed five songs and once he touched down dropped off his bags by a friend and found the nearest studio to record. Staying close to the streets and having to live, eat and record Mista Fat became a full time hustler. His D boy crew consisted of some very talented rappers whom Mista Fat dubbed “Rebel Konnected.” Mista Fat wrote a lot of their material and rehearsed the group when time permitted. Fighting for position on the block caused Mista Fat to get into many street battles with his D boy rivals. After a mad clash of force between crews, Mista Fat compose his hit single “Who That Is. Mista Fat say’s “after fighting in the streets and banging hand to hand, this one guy kept saying who that is after I repeatedly punched and kicked him up and down the street.“ So after the fight Mista Fat actually composed the song while recuperating with a cigarette and 40 ounce. “I make music for the thugs who go hand to hand,” say’s Mista Fat. Moving more than 3,000 Mix tapes of “This is Memphis MothaF#%ka”, Mista Fat has create a niche that only the street will appreciate.
“In Memphis there is a tradition of good soul music, so my sound will not only make you mean mug and move at the same time.“ Knowing how to rock a crowd with his fist as well as the mic, Mista Fat is not content standing on stage and blandly rapping. Mista Fat bellows out his lyrics with enough emotion and charisma that will make even the most ice grilled up thug needing “ass and elbow room” Satisfying the local Memphis market with the syrupy slow crunk sounds indigenous to Memphis would be easy, however Mista Fat along with heat makers Enigma and Greg on the Tracks, have creatively carved out a sound that not only matches his intensity but can compete with any Southern banger on the Billboard chart.
While prepping for his fall 2006 CD release on Memphis Indie City Slick Entertainment, Mista Fat was surprised when 4 intruders stormed through his backdoor and sprayed over 20 rounds of bullets. Utilizing his deft athletic skills, Mista Fat managed to escaped while slipping and ducking but still was wounded by 5 bullets. On bed rest for 3 months Mista Fat recuperated with physical therapy and writing volumes of material for future CD’s.
Now fully healthy Mista Fat’s debut CD, Hustle Motives, fuses together southern traditions of funk and soul into a strong dose of hardcore contemporary hip hop. The fervent “Hustle Motives” is a soulful and thought provoking yet simple 12 song collection where Mista Fat skillfully sets you up with jabs of danceable tracks then knocks you out with body shots of street anthems.
