| Harlem seems to give birth to many creative trend setting MC’s such as Ma$e, Cam’Ron, Big L and Doug E. Fresh, but the future of Harlem now has a name that’s not to be forgotten. Maurice “MoeRoc” Clayton is creating a street buzz with his Out Of Control Mixtapes. His talent along with his work ethic has become a deadly combination for the 21-year old rapper.
MoeRoc had never rapped before in his life, until his brother convinced him to try during a freestyle session with friends in high school. “I had no idea what I was doing,” MoeRoc admitted, “but before I knew it, words just started flowing out.” Ever since then, he has recorded over 120 songs. “Every block in New York has at least 5 niggas that claim they can rap…so the only way to distinguish yourself from this bucket of crabs will be your skill, originality and consistently…. that’s why I’m always in the studio working on new material,” MoeRoc explains.
MoeRoc grew up in a drug-infested neighborhood, but that did not mar his charismatic personality. He is also considered as a “perfectionist.” “If it has my name on it, it has to be done right,” MoeRoc justifies. Ted “Born” Clayton has been recording songs with his brother MoeRoc for about 4 years and recalls how far the two have come. The pair has gone from recording tracks in their room with a little four-track mixer to laying songs down in million dollar studios.
The elements that distinguish MoeRoc are his smooth flow, range of versatility, and especially his voice, which is always filled with emotions. From the cocky boast in “I Got It” to the gentle allure in “You Know I,” MoeRoc shows his skill as a storyteller. And in order to stay versatile, MoeRoc collaborates with many different producers so his music will have a different sound that breaks away from the hip-hop boundary, but still remain true to the genre that he grew up listening to. Therefore, most of the beats employ live instruments, including the thumping bass, the wailing guitars, and the sultry cellos. “I like to mix it up so my music will always sound fresh, I never want to limit myself.” MoeRoc validates.
On his current Mixtape, Out Of Control Vol. 02, MoeRoc takes his skills to a new level touching on many different issues with creativity in every track. Musician/Engineer Bernard “Cardi” Augustin recalls “There was this one song I recorded where Roc is telling a story over a musical piece from the movie Dead Presidents, and I was blown away recording it…I’ve never heard anything like that.” In order to ensure variety, MoeRoc recorded over 40 songs in less than 2 months for Vol. 02. “I want my latest project to always be my best work.” The Out of Control Mixtape Collection sheds some light on how MoeRoc feels about moving up the ladder in the hip-hop industry, including how he feels about the skeptics that thought he would never make it. But MoeRoc and the rest of his team are confident in every move that the Harlem MC makes so expect to hear a lot more from this future star real soon.
