Citizen Smith: a Musical Revolution
In a small town on the South Coast of the United Kingdom there are the first faint stirrings of the revolution. Our unlikely revolutionaries are five Sussex lads and they could be on the brink of changing the way we think about music.
Imagine, if you will, a world where you can download any song you want… for nothing… legally! That is the world of Mr Smith. They are offering all their songs online for free. At first this seems like a crazy idea, but the more you think about it, the more it starts to make sense. With computer technology making it increasingly easier to share files over the internet and the frequency with which music files are transferred across the internet, relying on CD sales (where the record company takes most of the profit) is somewhat unreliable.
So, instead of working against modern technology, they’re making it work for them. However, the MrSmith website is so much more than just a place to download their songs, look at pictures of their latest gigs or find out when the next gig is happening. It's a place that fans go to meet, talk about the band or anything they like in one of the many forums. Fans can also upload their own pictures, watch short videos; including the educational "Brew’s Kitchen Tour" and the highly amusing MrSmith "promotional" visit to Spain as well as keeping up with the latest band news.
This highly interactive website along with some serious promotional work has led to a huge number of fans, "Smithers" and "Smithettes", who are continually coming back to be kept up to date with what’s happening in the world of the Smith! Everyday it seems there are new people to get to know.
Some of you at this point may be starting to wonder, if they are giving the music away for free, how are they going to make any money? Well the plan is to rely on gigs and the selling of MrSmith merchandise (also available on the website) and so far the plan seems to be working well, with their first gig sold out a month before they performed it! No doubt in part due to the ever increasing number of hardcore fans.
Mr Smith are so confident that they can make this idea work, that Gav, Tom and Dirk, who have been playing together for years, all gave up their jobs and as of New Year's Day this year have dedicated themselves full time to Mr Smith.
Gav, the front-man and lead vocalist has been particularly busy on the recruitment side of things, his wit and charismatic charm proving to be irresistible to the ladies!! Tom, the guitarist, has been working equally hard, whilst still finding time to keep the band and visitors supplied with tea, made in his own unique style. Dirk, the man who never sleeps, works unceasingly (except when called upon for bass/recording duties) on keeping the website looking pristine and constantly updated with the latest technology as well as providing support for fan members computer problems!
As the number of fans has increased, so has the number of band members with new additions in February. First of all they found Rob to take on the drumming and discovering that his twin brother, Jim, played guitar they soon had a five member band ready to awe their fans.
Serious rehearsing followed and their first gig as professional musicians was in April this year. It was met with great acclaim with comments such as "a truly awesome night. Mr Smith were utterly fantastic. DO NOT miss a chance to see them live!" and "Watch out world - Smith are coming, and they don't take any prisoners!!!" it is easy to see that the risks they've taken in going pro are well worth it.
Where will MrSmith be in 5 or 10 years time? There’s only one way to find out. Log on to www.mrsmithmusic.com and sign up. It’ll cost you nothing and it'll not only provide you with hours of entertainment during those hot, quiet summer days stuck at work, it’ll also give you a chance to be in the vanguard of the next music revolution.
