Biography

Mushroomhead is a band that formed in 1993 as a side-project of a few different local bands. Each member of mushroomhead was already in another band, and all of these bands practiced together in the same building. Eventually, the members of these bands became good freinds, and formed Mushroomhead. They had their first show, and originally fans didn't like the idea of the masks. They didn't wear masks because it was the "cool" thing to do, they did it because they realized that they didn't want fans to judge them based on their other bands that they were originally in. So, they all wore masks or face-paint of some sort. This eventually became their gimmick, but didn't rely on their onstage presance, to sell records. Instead, they relied on their sound, heavy guitars, keyboard riffs, Jeffory Nothing (Jeff Hatrix) as the high pitched vocals, and J-Mann (Jason Popson) as the low pitched vocals. They originally had a stripper named roxy, but she later left the band due to personal problems.

By 1995 the band had collected enough original material to release their first independant album, Mushroomhead, self titled. In 1997 they released their second release titled "Superbuick" and they also released an increadably rare Remix CD. By 1998 things had taken a bit of a turn, Road runner Records had contacted Mushroomhead, about a contract signing, but Mushroomhead declined. Within seven months, the band saw "Slipknot", which appered to be a carbon copy of Mushroomhead, which seems to be an arguement that continue's to this day amoung Mushroomhead fans.

1999 brought on Mushroomhead's third independant release, "M3". The sound was much heavier, borrowing riffs from a side-project band, "(216)". This year also brought about a new look For Mushroomhead. That year they introduced the "XX" look. To this day, they use a modified version of that look.

In May of 2000, The band made history as the first local band to headline Blossom Music Center, which is an ampitheater that holds nearly 20,000.

In May of 2001, Mushroomhead returned to Blossom Music center, to headline their second season opener in a row. They also released their first major national release, under eclipse records, entitled "Xx". Named after their masks, the album was a complitation of their previous three independant releases. Then in December of 2001 They signed to universal, and rereleased "Xx". With 2 extra songs, and a new pink floyed cover as the into to "Born Of Desire", the band was in trouble with "Eclipse Records", stating they were still under contract with them. On December 11th, MTV, MTV2, and MTV X, all unveiled Mushroomheads new music video for "Solitaire/Unraveling".

Now, in 2002, we here at Cleveland Local Music, wish only the best for Clevelands favorite home grown band.

I don't think that either band copied from each other. From what I've read in interviews with Slipknot and Mushroomhead both bands started at about the same time and they didn't know about each other. Mushroomhead was wearing masks at least a year before Slipknot though. I think that Slipknot may have been forced to copy them after they were signed to Roadrunner Records. I read in a Mushroomhead interview that they were in talks with the head of Roadrunner Records for a record deal and that they had sent him footage of them and the masks they were wearing at the time. But then the talks abrubptly broke off. Then like a year or two later Slipknot comes out with the same number of members and some of the same masks.	jman13

o.k ill say everything Mushroomhead came out in 1993 and wore mask b/c they were all in differnt bands which werent metal like techno,Hip-Hop,and hair metal and wore mask so none of their fans from their other bands would give them shit.Slipknot started in 1995 and wore mask b/c Shawn wore a clown mask into practice one day for fun and they got the idea from that.in like 99 i think Slipknot played a show in Cleveland (Mushroomheads home town) and some Shroom fans went their and started throwing mud at the stage and boowing them off then Slipknot got in a big fight with them and it started a riot.Mushroomhead were disiponted by this and appologised to Slipknot and have no problem with each other. i actually agree with Pigbenis on all this, cuz its pretty much the same thing i heard. But theyre not the only two bands that wear masks, there are others. I've seen some small time bands wearing jason masks, seen some in wereworlf masks and all sort of shit. Some bands drop the masks, not because theyre just like other bands but because theyre losing listeners because too many people give a shit that there are other bands who wear masks. People really shouldnt give a fuck if they copy another bands style or not, cuz they still kick ass no matter what, its just to make money. IMO Slipknot is better, but they both kick ass!	RAPsucksASS

haha azn watta fucking moron. as ofr my 2cents, i am a fan of both mushroomhead and slipknot, and they dont have a problem with eachother, so i dont see why all these so called "fans" find the need to create problems where there are none. my theory is they need something to give meaning to their worthless little poser lives. If they were actually loyal fans they would know there wasn't a problem and not get fired up on behalf of a band and then give a bad name to the fans of that band. I used to think that slipknot copied Mushroomhead. But after reading these comments, I reconsider. I still think MH is better. At least they don't have 3 drummers and a dj to make them sound good.	IAmARevenant
