With no band member over the age of 18, not many would consider My American Heart veterans of the rock scene. But the old saying of don't judge a book by its cover rings true for this San Diego five-piece.
My American Heart already has three national tours under their belt and their 2005 Warped Tour appearance at each show will be their fourth. Having accomplished so much in so little time speaks volumes about the band's work ethic, but to them, it's simply in their blood.
"I believe we work just as hard as any other band trying to become successful, you just give it your best and it's true, you get out what you put in," explains vocalist Larry Soliman. Joining Soliman on this journey is Jeremy Mendez (guitar/vocals), Jesse Barrera (guitar/vocals), Dustin Hook (bass), and Steve Oira (drums).
The becoming sound of My American Heart is centered on "bringing the rock" with their own inspired and creative flair. "We have a retro rock kind of vibe mixed with our own sound," explains Soliman. "We never ever came out saying we want to sound like this band or that band, we just made what felt natural to us from what we've learned and just went with it."
The band recently put the finishing touches on their debut full-length album, "The Meaning in Makeup" which will be released September 13th on Warcon Entertainment.
The band was able to work with producer extraordinaire Sal Villanueva (Taking Back Sunday and Thursday) as well as mixing engineer Matt Squire (Thrice, The Receiving End of Sirens, Northstar).
"All of us were very excited to work with Sal," explains Jesse Barrera. "He's produced two of the biggest bands in our scene today and those albums are still in heavy rotation in our CD players. This album is definitely going to show what we're really about."
So what are these youngsters about? With being so young, these kids are well beyond their age and their album title, "The Meaning in Makeup" reflects this. "The title is meant to reflect on the emphasis placed on personal aesthetics and cosmetic beauty within contemporary society," explains Soliman. "We hope it will open some eyes and help people to realize they don't need to change their appearance to gain acceptance and the real beauty, that found within, is often concealed with this process of layering heaps of empty cosmetics."
Even though the band has accomplished so much in their brief career, the best is yet to come and My American Heart is ready to deliver according to Barrera. "We're all still very young and we want people to look at our band and realize that anyone can do anything if they try hard enough, and we definitely want people to know that we bring the rock for sure!"
