My Morning Jacket was formed in 1998 in Louisville, Kentucky by Jim James (vocals, guitar). James created My Morning Jacket with his cousin, Jimmy Quaid (guitar), and friends: Two tone Tommy (bass), and J. Glenn (drums). The group would practice at Quaid’s grandparent’s house and play small gigs at local house parties and community centers. There music eventually caught the attention of the independent label, Darla Records.
My morning Jacket’s debut album, The Tennessee fire, debuted in 1999 to critical acclaim. The album may have gotten the group get noticed in the United States, but it made them stars in Europe. The band played four tours in Belgium and the Netherlands. Also, there was a television documentary based on the band by a Netherlands film company.
My Morning Jacket’s sophomore album, At Dawn, was released in 2001. By this time, drummer J. Glenn had left the group and he was replaced by K.C. Guetig. Also, keyboardist Danny Cash was added to the band’s lineup. The album, which was self-produced, also received acclaim the indie underground. My morning Jacket them embarked on a U.S. tour where they supported Guided By Voices. Soon after, however, Guetig was replaced by another drummer named Patrick Hallaham. The group’s music and their hard work touring paid off when they signed to ATO/RCA Records.
In 2002, My Morning Jacket released an EP entitled Sweatbeas. The group was also named by New Music Express as the “band to fall in love with in 2002.” In between recording a major label debut, My morning Jacket supported Arthur Lee and Love on the 2003 Forever Changes Tour.

a message i sent tonight-(I will not send cd's)------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------- -------------------------------
Hi there Anna,
How do you do? I hope all is well. I want to tell you that we made a huge mistake in walking out on My Morning Jacket at the Palace. I took part in their absolutely beautiful (for lack of a better word, sound familiar?) performance at Bonnaroo. The day was miserably hot and unbearably humid ($7 h2o's and $6 ice-creams) and to make matters worse, I had not been to sleep the night before. I reached a point to where i could walk no further and felt death to be eminent. Our camp was a mile or more away and there was 1/4 mile plus a line seperating me from known shade. I departed from my group and stumbled upon a row of people similarly gasping for air, water and inspiration passed out on the shady side of a bleacher structure. There we sat, grasping for life, facing a tent for the priveledged. These suits enjoyed water, alchohol and even hot meals, able to survive such conditions (air-conditioned campers and what-not). This made me think of Darwin's "survival of the fittest", an idea that had been, up until then, abondoned (in my opinion) by American society.
I awoke. We had just finished listening to govt mule (Soulshine) and then, by chance, we went to see them (the Louisvile band I do so profess). We took our seats on the dirt path and relaxed to this true trance music. The clouds came, followed by strong winds. An ominous dark sky now formed with huge gusts of wind. I am not speaking of gloomy skies, more like spots of pure lit sky with layered beautiful darkness around them. We are soothed by the incredible vocals, environment and music (in that order). Toward the end of "steam engine" AOL Music: My Morning Jacket: 'Steam Engine' ... It begins to rain, slow at first, HUGE and unrelentless drops. I move closer to the crowd, to the sirens. I feel one with all of my surroundings: band, people, earth, and music. It rained until sun-up, and I saw damien rice in a trashbag. It was one of the most beautiful and powerful experiences I have ever been a part of. Something I will remember forever. Jim (lead singer) produced the mud puddles for us to play in. I bought "It Still Moves". I highly recommend you buy it or listen to it. I just ordered the bonnaroo cd also, if u want a copy.
