Nappy Roots consists of Skinny DeVille, B. Stille, Ron Clutch, Big V, R. Prophet, and Milledgeville. The group formed in 1995, when these six students met while attending West Kentucky University in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Nappy Roots began making music at their local music store, ET’s Music. In 1998, they released their debut album, Country Fried Chess. With the rise in popularity of Dirty South, record labels flocked to the group. Nappy Roots eventually signed with Atlantic records. In 2002, the sextet released their major label debut entitled Watermelon, Chicken, and Gritz. The album contained the hit singles: “Aw Naw,” “Po’ Folks,” and “Roun’d The Globe.”
