The 19 year old Nellie McKay makes the real deal.
She sings,has a quirky voice, evokes so many emotions that people can relate to... McKay (who is also a talented pianist) brings an unlikely combination of influences to her work, which isn't easy to categorize. The New York City resident is relevant to pop/rock, but she is also relevant to cabaret, traditional pop, and vocal jazz.
Surprisingly, her debut album "Get Away from me" has a few rap tracks. (Including the single "Sari" about everything that gets on her nerves, including McKay herself.)
Scandalous? No. Controversial? Maybe a little. McKay had some creative differences with the label; she wanted to call her debut album either "Black America" or "Penis Envy", and Columbia didn't like either idea. But eventually, McKay and Columbia agreed on the title Get Away from Me.
Who is Nellie McKay? Simply a music prodigy.
