More of a concept than a true band, Neutral Milk Hotel is the product of the imaginative mind of Jeff Magnum. It has been a solid band, and probably will be again, but at any given time it could be as simple as Magnum and a few of his friends, or even Magnum and some furniture that has nice acoustics.
One of the most notable aspects of Neutral Milk hotel is Magnum\'s voice. There is not exactly one way to describe it, as with most of his concept. It is melancholy and dreamy, gruff and smooth, understated and powerful, but one thing is for sure, it can hold perfect a note. Something we see far to little of today, he uses his voice as an instrument, and not as an adjunct to the foreground instrumentation as most artists do.
Due to the fact that Jeff Magnum is rather restless and does not stay in one place for long, Neutral Milk Hotel does not have a place it is officially from. The most frequent members, and Magnum himself were raised in Louisiana though, and this is where the first singles were recorded beginning in the early 1990\'s.
The most definitive and commercially successful LP of this outlandish band was \"In the Aeroplane over the Sea\" (1998). Not as rough, dark, or contradictory as earlier releases, this CD was made more readily available than others and succeeded to hook many indie fans, and other people looking \"for something different.\"
As I previously asserted, there is no single way to describe this band or its music because it is constantly contradicting itself and the general sound changes with every song. As critic Phill McMullen stated, \"If great art is born of suffering then Neutral Milk Hotel is high art indeed; and if it ain\'t, then it still makes for wonderful pop music.\" You truly have to hear Neutral Milk Hotel for most of this to make sense, so the bottom line is; if you have not listened to them, check out Neutral Milk Hotel as soon as you can, if you don\'t like it, at least you were exposed.
