Canadian rock band, Nickelback, consists of Chad Kroeger (lead singer/
vocals), Ryan Peake (guitarist), Mike Kroeger (bassist), and Ryan
Vikedal (drummer). Nickelback was formed in Vancouver, British Columbia,
Canada in 1996 by brothers Mike and Chad Kroeger. The two then
convinced their cousin, Brandon, to join the band (he is no longer a
member). Brandon’s friend, Ryan Peake also joined. Nickelback got their
name from Mike’s work at the Starbuck’s Coffee Co. Customers would
always purchase $1.45 coffee and give him $1.50. Thus, he was always
giving ‘nickel(s) back.’ Shortly after forming, Nickelback constructed a
seven song demo they called Hesher. They promoted the demo by playing
constantly at local, live gigs. In 1997, Nickelback released their debut
cd entitled Curb. In order to promote their cd, Nickelback was
constantly touring. Meanwhile, their music was getting enormous airtime
on Canadian airwaves. By 1999, the group was famous in Canada and quite
respected. They were also going very quickly through drummers. By late
1999, they settled with drummer Ryan Vikadel. In March 2000, Nickelback
released The State on their own independent label. Shortly after they
signed with Roadrunner Records. The two singles, “Breather” and “Leader
of Men” were top ten on mainstream rock charts. The single, “Old Enough”
was a top twenty. The group began touring in the U.S. By 2001,
Nickelback had a huge following of fanatics. They had also earned
credibility by touring with groups such as Silverchair, Creed, and
Everclear. They release, Silver Side Up in 2001. The single, “This is
how Your Remind Me” immediately went to the top of the charts.
Surprisingly, the song was written fairly quickly while the group was
practicing prior to going into the studio one afternoon. Nickelback
continues to tour extensively. They were featured on the Spiderman
soundtrack and are rumored to be singing on the Spiderman two soundtrack,
which is scheduled to be released in 2004.
