The Nields is composed of Narissa Nield (vocals, songwriter), Katryna Nield Chalfant (vocals), David Jones Nield (guitar), Dave Chalfant (bass), and Dave Hower (drums). Sisters, Narissa and Katryna, grew up in New York. When she was only seven years old, Narissa began writing songs while Katryna would sing in the family kitchen or on car rides. The two attended the prestigious boarding school, The Madeira School, for high school. After graduation, Katryna enrolled in Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut. She studied Theology and English. Meanwhile, Narissa attended Yale University where she also studied English. While attending Yale, Narissa met graduate student and guitarist, David Jones. The two fell in love, and in 1990 they got married. Jones took his wife’s middle name. The group moved to Washington DC and began playing in local coffeehouses. In 1991, they re-located to Windsor, Connecticut.
While in Connecticut, David took a job as an English teacher and chairman of the theatre department at the boarding school, Loomis Chaffee. In 1992, The Nields released their debut album entitled 66 Haxsey Street. In 1993, they released Live at the Iron House Music Hall. The album was recorded at their performance in Northampton, Massachusetts. Soon after, the group added Dave Hower to the band. He played the drums. In 1993, The Nields released Bob on the Ceiling. The album was produced by bassist, Chalfant. Chalfant and Karysa soon married. In 1996, the group released Gotta Get Over Greta, which was produced by Kebin Moloney (Sinead O’Connor, U2). In 1998, The Nields released Play. Soon after, the two sisters were asked to play at Lilith Fair without the male members of their band. Their concert gave the band much exposure. The group then took a break when Karysa was pregnant. In 2000, The Nields released; If You Lived Here, You’d Be Home By Now. Soon after, they released Love and China. Love and China was a solo project of Narissa and Karysa.
