Formed in Finland in 1997, sumptuous goth-metallers Nightwish were founded by keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen, initially to create acoustic music. After recruitng operatically trained vocalist Tarja Turunen, the band's sound evolved using fully-formed metal instrumentation. Joining the two were guitarist Emppos Vuorinen, bassist Sami Vanska and drummer Jukka Nevalainen. They released their debut album, 'Angels Fall First', in Finland in 1997, and in 1998 it was released throughout Europe. Phenomenal success followed in their native Finland with the release of sophomore album 'Oceanborn', which spawned three top 10 singles. A European tour followed, ending with third album 'Wishmaster', the band's first US release. 'Over the Hills and Far Away' was released in 2001, and 'Century Child' followed in 2002. Latest album 'Once' (2004) was to be the band's first taste of mainstream fame in Britain, where they are touring in early 2005.
